Don't Worry; Everybody is Okay

Yesterday (Saturday) Carrie & I got up at a reasonable time and went and worked out. After that we swung by Trader Joe's so I would have foodstuffs to eat whilst Carrie was an out-of-towner. We came home and I showered while Carrie dyed her hair, then she showered after that. Then as we were getting ready we got a call from 'Nea.

We were glad to hear from her, because we hadn't talked to her in a while. But we weren't so glad when we heard that she had brought Baby Eva to the hospital because she thought she might have pneumonia. Lena was there as well, and apparently had eventually said that she "wanted Carrie."

So the two of us drove down to the hospital and found them there, and we took Lena to the commissary for lunch. I had a cheeseburger, Carrie had a grilled cheese sammitch, and Lena had a salad (and a bag of Cheetoes). She also got a sammitch and a banana for her mom, which we brought back to her. They hadn't gotten to see a doctor yet, so we took Lena again.

We took her on our errands to Fred Meyer's to look for Project Runway Season 1 for Carrie, and to buy macaroni and cheese for me. We also went to the bank there, where Lena's aunt Rachel just happens to work, so those to chatted for a while.

After Fred Meyer's we went to Chéz Targét so carrie could look for her DVDs and so that I could go to the bathroom. She didn't find Season 1 anywheres!

After Target we drove to Liana's house just up the street a bit. She was having an open-house for all her family, friends, and co-workers to see their new house. When we walked in I noticed her husband and a couple of friends were playing Wii Tennis, and they almost immediately said they needed a fourth player. Who was I to turn them down?

Unfortunately I lost. But fortunately Liana's house is incredibly cute! And it has a tonne of extra rooms downstairs. It has secret rooms opening up off of secret rooms. Very cool.

We were going to drive back to our house after that, but we got a call from Jay saying that he was home now and could take Lena. Lena initially didn't want to go to her own house, but of course as soon as she saw Jay she was all, "Daddy! Daddy!" and huggy and happy to see him.

After all of that we came home and relaxed for quite a while. I don't even really remember what we did in the afternoon, though I do remember playing some Mega Man X4. Linnea called to say that they'd seen the doctor and Eva had some sorta bronchitis-like thing (I don't remember what it was called). But she was doing much better and they were back home at their house relaxing. So that was good. Don't worry; everybody is okay.

Carrie cooked the Trader Joe's pizzas for din-dins. I ate half of mine and then took the other half down to Fools Play.

It was Fools Play Dream Hotel, the first time I'd performed as a main character in that format. It was a pretty fun show, but the audience was strangely cold. They enjoyed it, but for the most part it was really hard for me to tell if they liked it or not. It was only afterwards in talking to them that I learned how much they enjoyed it. Weird.

After the show Cupcakeface, Tia, and her boyfriend Tim all piled into my car and I drove Cupcakeface back to her apartment because she wasn't feeling well. Then I took Tia & Tim to the Rib Eye and hung out with people there, getting my customary Patty Melt and taking the tots to go.

I dropped Tia & Tim off at her apartment and then drove on home to give the tots to Carrie.

Happy Birthday, Sandy & Jason

What a day today! But this post is about yesterday (Friday). Carrie & I both got up earlier than normal so that she could go into the store and so that I could make it so that all of the Bellingham Bead Festival Classes had their "Sign Up Now" buttons in place. Then at 8:00 I uploaded them all so that people could sign up for them.

Calvin Sampson came in to Ever After to help clean/organize a bit in the morning. I got a lot of little programming bits done, like making a customer registration area, and figuring out gift certificates and a reward program.

For some reason, though, for the past three days I've lost contact with the thisischris.com server in the morning, for about five to fifteen minutes. Very strange, and not at all reproduceable as it seems completely random.

Anyway, Carrie called me right as I was leaving and said she really didn't have time to take a full lunch break, so would I gather something and bring it to her at the store? So I went to MSM II and got a Mike's Deluxe and took it to her, where we had lunch at her desk.

I took home a little handout thing for Viki's Bead Shopping Savvy class. I just had to do an illustration of a necklace, of which I already had all of the pieces. So I just finished creating the illustration and was about to email it to them at the store, when they called and told me that they had changed their mind; instead of a necklace they wanted a bracelet with a toggle clasp that had some dangly bits coming off of it. So I severely shortened my necklace illo and added some dangly bits to it before emailing it off.

After that I talked to Cupcakeface for a bit on the phone, then I went out shopping for Sandy's birthday present. I looked at the animé store in the T-Town Mall, but I was uninspired, and the guy behind the counter seemed like a total douchebag. So I started walking back through the mall towards where I parked my car, and I saw this T-shirt:

I figured Sandy would like it, so I bought it.

I also swung by Michael's on the way home and bought some canvas paper. I know Leia uses it all the time when she paints at my house, and I was very curious about it. Plus, I had an idea that I wanted to paint a pictured for Jason's birthday present.

So I got home and fixed a problem wherein Heather had messed up the code on one of the BF pages (haw haw), then Carrie called so I picked her up.

Carrie did a whole bunch of iTunes stuff, getting new songs and making playlists and schtuffis like that. I spread out my painting stuff in the office and got to work. In no time I had my idea sketched out, and then I ripped off a piece of canvas paper and some time later I had this:

I call it "Robot Plus Carrot"

I used the paper cutter to crop it to 5" x 7" and stuck it in one of the frames I have lying around. Then I wrapped it up and Carrie wrapped up the shirt, and at 7:00 we headed up to Seattle for Sandy & Jason's joint birthday party at Jason's apartment!

I printed out directions from Google Maps, and they were plenty accurate, though one of the streets we had to turn on was horribly un-labeled in the real world. We turned around as soon as I realized it (only about 30-45 seconds too late, so not bad), and parked across the street from the address that Sandy had put on the invitation.

We then walked down to the address written on the invitation, only to discover that it was not an apartment building, but a house.

So I called Jason and told him where we were, and the address that was written on the invitation. He said that that wasn't actually his address! Fortunately his REAL address was just a few numbers up the street, so we walked until we saw him standing on his balcony waving at us. Then we went upstairs and joined the party.

My brother was already there, along with Edlund and Jen (of course), and three people I'd never met before: Marie, Anne, and her boyfriend Mike.

It was a fun party! Sandy & Mathias showed up with Josiah and his GF a while later. Jason and Sandy both luuved the presents we got them. There was pizza and peanut-butter-and-chocolate cupcakes, and some sorta really yummy mango cake.

We left just about the time Geoff & Lisa arrived, because we was tired peoples. The drive back home was much more un-eventful than the drive up.

Just Didn't Link Up

So yesterday (Thursday) was a very usual day. Very typical. I went to work, picked Carrie up for her split-shift, and worked some more in the afternoon.

Then around dinnertime Christine called me and asked me if she should pick me up to go to Lawrence's show up in Bellevue.

Here's the thing: I knew that Lawrence was having a show on Thursday. I also knew that yesterday was Thursday. But for some reason those two pieces of information in my brain never linked up.

Long story short, she swung by (looking very cute in a very familiar top) and picked me up about a half hour later, and drove the two of us up to the Hear Music Coffeehouse in Bellevue Square. Besides being where Lawrence works, this is also where the show was to take place.

We got there about an half-hour before the show was to start, so I went wandering over the sky bridge near Nordstrom's and into the mall proper. It was my mission to find Season One of Project Runway for Carrie to watch on the upcoming plane to Tucson. I got distracted, however, by the gigantic Apple store they have in the mall. I walked through it and drooled for quite a while.

By the time I was done there, I only had a couple more minutes to walk through the mall before I had to walk the great distance back to the Starbucks. So I didn't find the DVDs. Ah, well.

I got back in time and bought Christine a coffe, and myself a hot chocolate and a sausage breakfast sammitch (I were hungee for din-dins). The show started while I was doing this.

The first act was a girl who annoys Christine. I don't remember her name. She had a really good voice, but she was very young and didn't have any stage presence. It was better to close your eyes and listen than it was to watch her perform. But that'll come with time and confidence, so she'll be fine sooner or later.

The second act was absolutely spectacular. It was as if I had been transported back to the authentic 1970s. It was two guys with feathered hair (check out this photo)

and a black woman in a red dress and spectacular red high-heeled pumps:

And they were really, really good. It sounded like they'd been doing this for 30 years, and they had it down. One funny thing: the pickup in the guy on the right (pictured above)'s guitar broke right before their set was supposed to start, so he actually played Lawrence's electric guitar ("Roxanne") for the show. They did several very crowd-pleasing songs, and they all had really good presence, in that they were obviously very into what they were doing.

After that it was Lawrence's turn. I experimented some with the video camera in my phancy phone and got this 30-second clip:

It was pretty much a shorter version of his usual set, although he did "It's Not Easy Being Green" instead of "Rainbow Connection." Though at the end, by request, he did "No Hurricane No Cry," a version of "No Woman No Cry" with funny lyrics about being a Katrina refugee.

After the show Christine drove all three of us (four if you count Roxanne, who I dutifully buckled up in the backseat next to me) back down to T-Town.

Into the Wee Hours

Yesterday (Wednesday) when I went into work I was surprised to find Jessica already there. She'd gone in at 8:00 in order to deal with all the orders. I hadn't had time to eat breakfast at home, so I brought an enchilada in with me and ate it at my desk.

I got Carrie for lunch. When I got to the store she was still busy helping a customer, so I talked to Christine. Here's basically how the conversation went.

Christine: Hi! How are you?

Chris: Good! How are you?

Christine: I'm good.

(Pause)

Chris: I've got an orange fork in my pocket!

When we got home Carrie ate the other enchilada whilst I ate the rest of my sushi. After she went back to work I beat Spark Mandrill in Mega Man X, then got to work on the Bellingham Bead Festival Site.

Carrie swung by and picked me up around 4:30 and we went and worked out for a while. When we came back she made us some Trader Joe's pizzas for din-dins and then I cracked down on the BBF stuff some more while she went out shopping.

She came back home with a couple of things, though not things she really wanted. I took a break from work at 9:00 to watch a new episode of Mythbusters (sinking car), then got right back to work and worked straight through until 1:30 AM or so. There was some badness with trying to upload all the pages I'd made, because they'd changed the FTP info stuff without actually telling me (which I just found out this morning). Whoopsy!

Unseasonably Warm!

Yesterday (Tuesday) was unseasonably warm. It was almost 50 degrees in the afternoon in January!

For some reason downtown was jammed full of cars, so finding parking near Ever After was more difficult than usual. One time when I came inside from moving my car, Jessica thrust her keys at me and had me move her SUV because the ticketer was hovering nearby. I had to drive around several blocks three times before I found a parking place.

Carrie got home before me, having walked home early due to the fact that she was going to go back into work earlier in the evening to help Jen setup for class. Carrie was actually asleep napping when I got home. I can't remember what I had for lunch, but then Carrie & I hung out. I worked on BF stuff in the later afternoon, and then sometime after 4:00 we went to the Bartell's so we could buy a whole bunch of pharmacy-type stuff that we were out of or low on. Like Tylenol and makeup and Q-tips. Little stuff like that, but it added up quickly.

I dropped Carrie off directly at the Bead Factory from there, and then I went and filled up with gas and hit Fred Meyer's, where I transferred some moneys around at the ATM then bought a stack of blank CDs. Fred Meyer's is undergoing some major renovations. Half of the ceiling is practically torn out.

I came home and ate a bunch o' sushi for din-dins while watching some Brisco County, Jr. I then finally cracked open my Mega Man X Collection and played some of the original Mega Man X. It's been, oh, about twelve years probably since I'd played it, but it came back to me pretty easily.

I worked on BF stuff some more until it was time for the new episode of Veronica Mars! Hooray! 'Twas a good one, mostly due to it heavily featuring Mac (though Wallace was conspicuously absent). Even Weevil had a cameo.

Somewhere in all of this I watched another episode of Brisco—the last episode in fact. Now I just have to watch some special features and I'll have conquered that DVD box set.

I picked Carrie up after her class and we played some Tetris and watched some Home Movies.

Come On Over for Lunch

Yesterday (Monday) Carrie did not go in to work in the morning; she took it off because she had to go in to work on Saturday. She stayed home and cleaned the kitchen whilst simultaneously cooking a bunch of stuff. But she still got up around the same time I did so that she could do all of that stuff. So I made us both some eggs for breakfast before heading out to Ever After.

Why? Because about an hour after I got home all of the Bead Factory managers came over for a managers' meeting and lunch. There were:
  • Viki
  • Carrie
  • Melissa
  • Heather
  • Christine
  • Leilani

I worked in the office while they ate in the dining room (I got a plate and loaded itup several times during the course of the meeting). For lunch Carrie made:

  1. Crostini with artichoke spread
  2. Crostini with smoked salmon roulade
  3. Breaded & fried cheese ravioli with marinara dipping sauce
  4. Marinated, heated olives
  5. Smoked gouda muffins
  6. B.L.T. salad with spinach for the "L" and homemade dressing
  7. And créme brulée for dessert

Have I ever mentioned that I married a fantastic chef? 'Cause I really did. I'm creating a new "Cooking" label so I can talk about whenever one of us cooks something really fantastic (It'll be her nine times outta ten, I guarantee).

Anyway, Carrie went straight from the meeting back to work, so I put away all of the food and ate a bunch of it while doing so. Carrie went straight from work to Ikea with Viki, so I was left to my own devices all evening, which consisted of watching a couple episodes of Brisco, a new episode of Heroes, and working a bunch on the final illustrations for the Bead Factory's how-to book.

Viki took Carrie straight from Ikea to Southcenter Mall (or whatever the Hell they call it now), where Carrie spent all of her gift cards and the rest of her Christmas money on new pants and a super-cute kimono-style top with a brown and turquoise Japanese pattern print on it. Super-cute.

At almost 11:00 Carrie called me to come pick her up from the Lareau homestead, so I drove up there and collected her and her new acquisitions.

Pajama Party

Yesterday (Sunday) apparently Carrie did not get good sleep at all, due almost entirely to the "fact" that I was snoring constantly. At one point she event went out to the couch, but that hurt her neck too much to sleep out there so she came back and suffered through the noise.

I only remember her waking me up about my snoring once. She said it happened many, many times. I'm kinda miffed; I thought my snoring was gone, baby, gone. We'll have to see if'n it continues on.

Anyhoo, we went to Safeway in the AM and bought some groceries. Then after we came home and I unloaded the car I took it up to my brother's apartment for practice. We worked on the upcoming Dream Hotel, as well as more Strip Club Sub: The Next Generation, and more kidsplay stuffs as well.

Pretty much as soon as I got back home Carrie & I left for Trader Joe's to do some more shopping. And then pretty much as soon as we got back from that I had just enough time to put on some pajama pants and head over to Christine's for her pajama-themed Birthday Party! Hooray! I brought her a pretty bouquet of flowers.

'Twas a very fun party! There was a lots of 80s music (provided by Carrie), a lots of wine, and a lots of pretty girls in pajamas! And there was also a good bit of pizza that showed up via delivery. And there were party hats and balloons and everything (I got a pirate hat and an eyepatch).

Happy birthday, Christine!

Grump!

Yesterday (Saturday) something was off with my blood sugar, because I was a complete grumpy-puss for like the first half of the day. I went with Carrie to the Bead Factory at 8:30 so she could help Jen set up for her class. Then we went straight to Trader Joe's. I played some Animal Crossing in the car on account of I hadn't played the night before.

Carrie actually went back in and worked for a couple of hours, about noon until 2:00, while I worked on a bunch of miscellany. After she got back and made some Mandarin chicken for lunch, and I took a shower, I started to feel less grumpy.

We went to Target and I spent all of my remaining Christmas moneys on new clothes. And especially new black socks. I swear I have dozens of black socks and no two of them match, so I've decided just to throw them all out and start over, only buying one kind of sock so that it doesn't matter which two I grab; they'll all match.

Carrie found a new workout outfit, too, and it's super-cute!

Anyway, we got back home and I got ready for Fools Play and Carrie & I hung out. Then I left (I actually ran a little late—whoops).

Mike had some sorta fever cold, so he wasn't even sure he was gonna perform. But the Tylenol kicked in and the fever went way, way down, so he was right in there mixing it up with me and Geoff. We did "20 Questions," a format I really like. It was good, pretty tight show (time-wise), and we repeatedly made each other bust up on stage. So that was good.

It was also a really large audience, but very slight on the regulars. A lot of faces I didn't really recognize. Tia, Cupcakeface, and Tiare were all not there, for example.

Afterwards I went to Rib Eye and hung out at the same table as Leia & Kedar and Mathias. Apparently there were two people who didn't come in to work that evening, so our waitress was stretched pretty thin. But I took my tots home, and also got an extra order of cheese tots to take home.

But by the time I got home I was just so danged sleepy that I was out practically before my head hit the pillow!

Divergent

Yesterday (Friday) in the evening Carrie went with a couple of girls from work as well as Sophie to see one of them Dancing things that happens around here every once in a while. Not really my scene, so instead of going to that I was picked up by Carrie's mum and went over to their house, where Carrie's Great Aunt Carolyn was making dinner (chicken with rice) and dessert (rhubarb pie).

After dinner but before dessert we watched A Prairie Home Companion on the DVD. Carrie showed up somewheres around the last half hour and then joined us for dessert before the two of us went back on homewards.

What is Your Kung-Fu?

Yesterday (Thursday) was quite an eventful day. Well, first of all Jessica & I got yelled at by an horrible Indian man, the owner of the India Mahal restaurant next door to Ever After, for using the shared bathroom in the hall. The bathroom that our landlord explicitly said we can use—in fact it explicitly says on our lease that we can use it.

I feel really, really sorry for the man. It must be hard to have a life that has nothing more important in it than obsessing about who is or is not using a bathroom.

Anyhoo, after work I got Carrie for lunch. We ate the leftover soup and then I made macaroni & cheese for the second course. I worked on BF stuff while Carrie took a nap, and then around 3:00 or 3:15 I went and filled the car up with gas and headed up to hang out with Sandy y Mathias in Seattle.

We went to Maneki for dinner, which is excellent, excellent, excellent. I had:
  • Tako Yaki
  • Salmon steamed in foil pouch with onion, mushroom, and miso sauce
  • Ika nigiri
  • Spicy tuna roll

Yes, I'm actually starting to be able to incorporate spicy foods back into my diet! Very exciting! Of course, my tongue has totally gotten out of the habit, so spicy things seem much more spicy to me. I've become re-sensitized over these past many years of not being able to indulge. Don't worry, I'll take it slowly.

After dinner Mathias was very tired, so he basically went to bed. Sandy & I walked a couple of blocks over and a couple of blocks up to this really cool underground place called Remedy Teas. I call it underground because you have to walk down some steps from the sidewalk to get into it, not because it's all edgy and undiscovered.

We each got a small pot of tea (I got jasmine/blueberry green tea) and sat around talking for the next couple of hours. On Monday Sandy has a phone interview for some kind of office assistant position at Cobalt. She's kinda nervous, even though she has basically had every kind of job in existence (I believe she said 65 jobs in 14 years), so there's not really anything they can ask her about that she can't draw on some experience of hers to deal with.

We also talked a lot about what I called "What is your Kung-Fu?" I've mentioned a couple of other times on this website that my philosophy is basically this:

Happiness is an organism efficiently doing its intended function

I believe that everybody has... a "Raison d'Etre" or "Purpose in Life" or "Kung-Fu." Basically, something that makes them happier—actually happier, not desperately trying to be happy by running away from yourself—than doing anything else. I call it a Kung-Fu because it's something that you always want to work at.

Me? I actually have a main Kung-Fu and a secondary Kung-Fu. My main Kung-Fu is "Creator." I make stuff. All the time. I paint, draw, etch, design websites, write, etc. The specifics are not important, just the category. One of the happiest days of my life was when I was in college and I had a cold and decided not to go to class. So I stayed home and in one day wrote 65 pages of a screenplay without really stopping except for a couple of bathroom and food breaks. The screenplay was pretty crappy, but that didn't matter. The result wasn't nearly as important as the fact that I was doing my intended function efficiently. I was just creating and creating and creating.

I'm fortunate now that I create for a living—all of my sources of income come from me creating things: websites, art prints, and etched glassware. It makes me feel a good amount of fulfillment, because I can feel it as certain as I can feel my heart beat that this is what I'm supposed to be doing.

My secondary function? I call it "Comfortidor" (it's a Buffy reference). I love to make my friends and loved ones feel better. I actually like it when my friends and loved ones to come to me with their problems. Hopefully I'll be able to help in some way, any way. And if not, at least they know that I'm there to listen to them, and maybe that alone will make them feel a little bit better. That's why I'm such a good listener. My Comfortidor Kung-Fu is also why I do Fools Play, because I get to help a crowd of people forget all their troubles and have a good time for a couple of hours (Fools Play also fulfills my Creator function, but to a lesser extent sometimes). Being a Comfortidor is more troubling than being a Creator, because it's very upsetting to me when there is nothing I can do to make someone feel better, whereas I can always create something, even if I just think up story/plot ideas in my head.

Anyway, I'm saying all of this stuff about my Kung-Fu because Sandy is kinda looking for hers right now. Which I think is really cool. There are all sorts of Kung-Fu's out there. There's Creator, Comfortidor, Server, Leader, Organizer, Learner, Explorer, Do-er (as in Physical Activity), Performer, Socializer, Teacher, etc. And there are as many ways to approach doing your Kung-Fu as there are types of Kung-Fu. But that's a topic for another post (I'm an "Assimilator"). And I think it's tremendously important that people try and figure out what their intended function is. It makes it a whole lot easier to be a whole lot happier if you know what it is that makes you (actually) happy.

Whew! Didn't mean to get so philosophical on y'all.

Dinner Partay

Yesterday (Wednesday) the snow and ice continued to melt all throughout the day. But there was a lot of it to get through, so it's still around.

I got to install a printer at work! I'm good at doing stuff like that. After work I got Carrie for lunch and made us both sammitches on her urging. After I took her back to work I dropped off my Thirsty Robots order at the Neighborhood Market post office, then headed to SafeWay to pick up that which I did not pick up the day before.

In the afternoon I took down the exterior Christmas lights (yes, they were still up—so what?) and started shoveling out the path to our front door. It were difficult work!

I picked Carrie up from work at 4:00 and took her home, then jaunted back to SafeWay to pick up one last thing she needed. When I returned home I set Roomba loose in the living room and helped Carrie cook and clean while continually clearing the front pathway using a shovel, a push broom, and boiling water. It still took quite a while.

Carrie's mom came over some time after 5:00 and I made her an apple martini while Carrie continued to cook. Around 6:00 everybody else showed up: Carrie's Dad, Grandma, and Great Aunt.

Then we had the bestest frickin' meal EVAR:
First Course:
Crab bisque
Salad:
Greek salad with tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, and feta cheese
Main course:
Tomato & goat cheese quiche
Roasted carrots with parsley, lemon juice, and olive oil
Wines:
Chenin blanc
Fumé blanc

Carrie made it all almost completely by herself and it was all absolutely amazing, especially the bisque. REAL crab!

After dinner she and her family all started playing a card game, and I went to work on dessert: fresh, hot, sweet applesauce. It also turned out to be quite, quite delicious.

Their card game lasted until after 9:00, so I started sneaking away to watch the Mythbusters Pirate Special. Everyone packed up and left between 9:15 and 9:30, and then I turned on Mythbusters out in the living room and relaxed while Carrie went in the bedroom and watched Top Chef and relaxed. We ran the dishwasher, which was good because we dirtied practically every dish in the house making this dinner. Oh, and Carrie also made some biscuits around this time.

At almost 11:00 Christine & Lawrence came over after Christine's class, and we all had another cup of the soup and some biscuits and some wine, and hung out until close to midnight.

No, Wait, It's Back

Yesterday (Tuesday) when we woke up in the morning it had snowed three inches and was actually currently snowing still. Fortunately it was actually very warm out (a degree or two above freezing), so I was able to drive Carrie to work. I decided not to risk the steep hills to downtown T-town, though, so I worked from home instead.

I brought Carrie home for lunch very early—before noon even. So I wasn't done working on my Ever After stuffs yet. She made me some soup for lunch, and then glanced out the window and just happened to see Lawrence walking by. So she called him in out of the cold (he's got a sick and shouldn't be walking around out in the cold anyway) and he hung out for a few minutes.

After lunch I took a shower and then went to Fred Meyer's to try to find all of the things on Carrie's list that she needed for tonight's up-coming dinner. I also looked through the on-sale clothing, but that store only has two dressing rooms for the entire store, and I didn't feel like waiting around to see if the clothes I picked out would fit or not.

Fred Meyer was completely out of heavy cream, and I couldn't find the frozen pie crusts. I could feel my blood sugar rapidly dropping me into grump mode, so I headed home and made myself a sammitch and relaxed with some Brisco County, Jr.

After I took Carrie back to the store to teach her class, I made myself some hot pockets for din-dins. I was supposed to clean up the living room and do some dishes because Carly might have had to stay the night (the hill near her house was almost impassable). In order to procrastinate I talked to Cupcakeface and Sandy on the phone for a while (separately). Then I did clean and wash many non-dishwasher-safe glasses before Carrie called to get me. Turns out Carly was able to negotiate her car away from her house, so she wouldn't need to crash at ours.

Carrie & I are both getting kinda sick of this snow stuff. Fortunately it was above freezing almost all of yesterday (and it was already above freezing by 8:00 this morning), so it shouldn't last for too too much longer.

Almost Gone

Yesterday (Monday) I went in to Ever After even though it was a Holiday for most people. I'm working on creating the templates using the incredibly complicated shopping cart system that Karla got for the site. It's crazy complicated!

Oh, by the way, if anybody is in the least bit interested, you can check my progress in the re-design by going to http://thisischris.com/proto/everafter/

Compare my version to the current version!

For lunch I made a couple of hot pockets. Carrie made a pizza and then shocked us both by eating the whole thing! After I dropped her off I tried to deposit some checks in the bank, forgetting that it was a holiday and they'd be closed. There's a lot of remodeling going on at Fred Meyer's right now, though! And most of their clothes are way on sale. I might go back and rummage through, but I didn't feel like it yesterday.

The roads were all much better conditions than they'd been in several days. Most all of the ice was going away, especially since it was sunny and above freezing for much of the day.

I worked on some Bead Factory stuff until it was time to get Carrie. We went straight from work to workout for about 45 minutes before coming home. For din-dins we (mostly she) cooked up all the leftover Rib Eye tots with onions, garlic, sour cream, and cheese, then cooked up some Li'l Smokies and some scrambled eggs. Everything was put in one big pan and we both ate from it with forks, "trough-style" as we called it.

In the evening I did a li'l bit more Bead Factory work, then watched a bunch of Brisco County, Jr. (I still have about a disc-and-a-half to go)while I worked on a Thirsty Robots order. That's what I forgot to mention! I got my first out-of-state order, from someone at a publishing company in New York! This is very exciting for me, because I'm pretty sure I've never seen her (all my other orders have been repeat customers from Winterfest). Hooray, robots!

Then, in the middle of the night it snowed almost three more inches. Sigh.

Hittin' the Slots

Yesterday (Sunday) Carrie & I got up at a basically reasonable time, though we were still dogged-tired. We went to Metropolitan Market to pick up some Brownie Bites (not for me), then headed north and picked up Carrie's grandma in Federal Way.

We took her to the Muckleshoot Casino. It was one of the Christmas gifts we gave her; some money and a date when we would take her. Yesterday was that date.

That place is huge. Sewiously. They have free valet parking, though, so we got to go right to the front door and wheel grandma inside in the wheelchair we brought along. Made it a little easier.

We played the poker slot machines, which is kinda fun. Unfortunately none of us did very well at all. I did the best, as I only lost ten bucks. Carrie & I took a lunch break and had some sushi at the little sushi bar inside the building.

Grandma played so much that she accrued enough points to get two crystal candlestick holder things as a parting gift.

We then drove to Carrie's folks' house, where we waited for a while for them to come home with Carrie's great aunt (and Grandma K's sister) Carolyn from Chagrin Falls. She's in town for the week.

Carrie had to go to a store meeting at dinnertime, but the rest of us had yummy pork roll. Carrie came back in time for leftovers and an apple/cranberry pie for dessert. 'Twas all tasty.

Carrie's dad said he'd take Grandma K back home, so Carrie & I drove on home ourselves. Carrie had a pretty bad headache, so I put her to bed and did some laundry, shut up the house, and joined her.

Rassle Dazzle 2007

Yesterday (Saturday) Carrie & slept in a little bit, but we were still really tired in the morning. We haven't been getting good sleep at all lately.

I made eggs for breakfast/lunch, and then we braved the ice and snow (yes, it's still around) and headed down to a discount medical supply place at 6th & Proctor so we could rent a wheelchair (which will come in handy today—check tomorrow's post for a mention of that). The place was pretty unbelievable; it was like something out of a weird, quirky comedy movie, like a Wes Anderson film or that movie Be Cool. The two guys in there (especially the older one who delivered a weird laugh after every raspy thing he said) were so unusual that Carrie & I both commented on it as we walked back to the car with the wheelchair.

Anyway, I ate an entire pizza for dinner, then gathered my many equipments and headed down to Fools Play, which was the fabulous Fools Play Rasslin' League presents: Rassle Dazzle!

The crazy thing was, as soon as I left Tacoma the ice and snow cleared up dramatically, to the point that down in Olympia it was bone-dry and ten degrees warmer than it was in T-town. So odd! Usually it's exactly the opposite; Tacoma tends to be a dry spot, and Oly usually gets slammed by storms.

Anyway, over 30 people came out despite the cold and enjoyed the show, which ran really, really long. But it was still really good. You can read the results of it on our results page.

Afterwards I was going to just go straight home due to the poor conditions, but since road conditions in Oly weren't poor at all, I actually went out and hung out with people at the Rib Eye and ate a patty melt. It was fun! And as I was leaving both Cupcakeface and Bethesda, Maryland loaded me up with the tots from their meal, so I brought almost three full orders of tots home to Carrie!

You Snooze, You Lose

Carrie & I haven't quite got the snooze function on our phone alarms down, so we didn't get up quite as early as we wanted to yesterday (Friday). Carrie walked to work, and due to the icy conditions and the fact that only a couple of inches of snow were lost on Thursday, I worked from home again.

At lunchtime I walked to Subway again and got the same exact thing as last time (I had another coupon), and ate lunch with Carrie in the party room.

I walked back home and worked some more until Carrie came home before 5:00. We ate the rest of the chicken casserole for dinner. I watched a couple of episodes of Brisco County, Jr. during and after dinner. Then later in the evening Steph called and invited us over to watch the Veronica Mars Season 3 episodes that she had on tape.

So we packed up a couple of bottles of Kinney Family wine and walked through the snow over to their house, where we hung out with her and Christine (and later Jamie showed up) and drank wine and watched Veronica Mars and it was goodtimes.

Afterwards we walked back home (Steph insisted on giving me a hat to keep my ears warm; I already had the scarf from the Christmas Party to keep my neck warm), played Tetris and went to sleep.

It's Still Here!

So Yesterday (Thursday) there were seven inches of snow on the ground when we woke up. The street was a big ol' sheet of ice. So I walked Carrie to work, came home, and worked from home for the day. I actually got quite a lot done!

Around 1:15 I walked down to the store for lunch with Carrie. She had me go a couple doors down to Subway and get us some sammitches. I had a coupon from the Entertainment Book, so they both came to under five bucks. We ate in the Bead Factory's Party Room with Steph and Christine, then I walked on back home.

It was sunny out in the afternoon, but barely above freezing, so the sun melted some of the snow, and then in the evening when the temperatures dropped again, all that melted snow turned into sheet ice. Funtimes!

Carrie walked home after work with Trevor in tow. She made us all some hot cocoa, and played some Tetris with Trevor in between watching Mythbusters and Teen Titans. Viki eventually came by with the other kids and picked him up. Carrie & I stayed home.

We made a rather yummy chicken casserole for din-dins (I cooked the chicken, Carrie cooked the vegetables and then put everything together in the oven). We also cracked one of Laura's family wines, a raspberry white zinfandel. It was really, really goot. I mean it! While I ate I watched most of Conan the Destroyer, the rarely-seen sequel to Conan the Barbarian. It's gloriously awful.

Around 10:15 I started to get sleepy ('cause I'm an old man), so I shut off the house, washed some dishes, got into bed and played some Tetris with Carrie. Still didn't get to sleep until just after midnight, though.

Almost Seven Full Inches

Yesterday (Wednesday) when we awoke in the morning there were a couple of inches of snow. But the roads were mostly bare, and so I drove Carrie to work anyway. I thought I might work from home, but for some reason teh intarwebs were out here at the house! So I braved the roads and drove to downtown T-town (I passed once accident on the way, wherein a car slid into a parked car).

By the time work was done, so was the snow. I went and picked Carrie up for lunch, and the Tarbet girls were hanging out at the store with the pug puppy as well. I actually got to talk to Brandy for a couple of minutes (she flies home on Friday).

I didn't have ANY appetite for lunch, probably due to the fact that for breakfast I ate a bunch of that super-hearty pasta from Tuesday. Carrie did not share my problem, and ate a whole bunch more of it.

She drove herself back to work, and then afterwards swung by and picked me up and we went to the gym to do the working out. On the news I saw how it was snowing up a crazy storm in the Seattle area, but when we left the gym there was nary a cloud in sight, and barely any snow left on the ground.

We came home and made din-dins, which consisted of salmon, broccoli, and the rest of the leftover pasta (although I did accidentally drop a good portion of it on the floor before serving it... kinda upset about that still). There were some Mythbusters on the TeleVision for me. Viki called Carrie about something-or-other (she and the kids were at the store for some reason I never gathered), and off-handedly mentioned that it was snowing. We looked out the window and *WHOOMP* there were already almost three inches on the ground in less than three hours. And it was still comin' down!

We decided to take our traditional snow walk. We headed over to the Tarbets, where Jay and Lena were enjoying the snow via the ATV. We hung out by the fire and talked with Linnea for a while before heading back. We thought about maybe walking to Starbucks to get some hot cocoa, but Carrie figured we had some at home somewhere, and that would be cheaper. Good thinking! Plus it had snowed another inch just while we were talking with Linnea.

So we walked home and made cocoa (with some Rumplemintz in mine) and watched our various TeleVision shows. It continued to snow.

Around 11:00 I went out with a ruler, and it sunk down almost seven full inches before hitting bottom.

Then it was Tetris and Teen Titans and sleepytimes.

There were still seven inches of snow when we woke up this morning.

NOW there's a new phone

Yesterday (Tuesday... right?) was a rare Tuesday in which Carrie did not have to teach class in the evening. Hence, it completely screwed up my sense of what day of the week it was. It kept on feeling like Monday... or Wednesday. But certainly not a Tuesday.

At work Jessica & I discovered that we're both avid Mythbusters fans. I told her about Veronica Mars; let's see if I can get another convert.

I picked Carrie up for lunch and we just scrounged around—I ate crackers with leftover cheese ball. After I took her back to the store I went to the gas station. For, y'know, like, gas or whatever. Then I came home and worked on Bead Factory schtuff and had a nice phone conversation with me mum.

Speaking of phone, I picked Carrie up from work and we went to the T-Mobile place near the Tacoma Mall and got new phones and a new, cheaper plan. It should save us roughly $30 a month, which is good. $30 can buy you a lot of things...
  • $30 worth of groceries
  • 1½ DVDs (full price)
  • Most of a video game
  • Dinner out
  • A movie date (with some change to spare)

Carrie got the cheapie $10 phone, which is still pretty cute, and is a lot like my old phone.

Due to the fact that she washed my iPod Shuffle a while back, Carrie let me get a phone with an MP3 player in it (in fact she insisted). So I got the new Razr V3t.

We came home and Carrie made her wonderful, wonderful spaghetti sauce. So I cooked up some noodles to accompany it. It was really, really tasty, but so hearty that I couldn't eat very much.

I then basically spent the rest of the evening playing with my new phone, entering in all my old contacts, etc. I downloaded the theme song to The Avengers for Carrie's ringtone (on my old phone it was the theme song to MacGuyver).

Then there was some Tetris DS and some Teen Titans at bedtime.

And while we slept, it snowed...

No Phone Yet

Yesterday (Monday) Karla didn't come in to work, so it was just the two of us employees all day.

After work I took Carrie home for lunch (nachos), then she drove herself back to work and I got a little bit of work done for the next couple hours. Then she came back and picked me up, and we went and worked out for almost an hour at the YMCA.

We came home and I made some fajita filling for dinner. The plan was then that we were going to go get new cell phones and/or a new cell phone carrier, but Carrie said she was too awful sore and tired to do that, and it was taking her forever to write down all of her contacts in her phone. So that did not end up happening.

Instead she spent many, many hours playing Tetris DS, while I caught up on my daily intarweb dose of stuff, and later watched some Mythbusters.

I didn't play Tetris with her in the evening, due to the fact that I'm still kinda seeing the game whenever I close my eyes. It's pretty bad, but it must be even worse for her! She plays it so much! I'm glad she appreciates my Christmas gift so much.

I'm the King Now, Baby

Yesterday (Sunday) was much more of an active day than was Saturday. Around brunchtime we went and met Steph and Katie Felesina at The Spar, where Katie Stricker works, to have a brunchy-type thing with them (Katie flew away later in the afternoon, so this was our last chance to see her). I had biscuits & gravy and a lot of hot tea. It was loads of fun!

We stopped by the house just very quickly, then headed to the Tarbets' so we could give the girls their Christmas presents (finally). We got socks and a little plush cow/hippo thing for Eva (well, really, the socks were more for Linnea). We got Lena a whole bunch of play food for her play kitchen in her closet. She really liked it, though when we left she refused to hug me because she said her daddy was the only boy she could like. It was very funny.

I dropped Carrie off at the house and continued on up to my brother's for Fools Play practice. We did some beginning-of-the-year business, figured out some FRPL things, and then Ed brought a whole mess of ideas to the table based on a children's theater thing he saw recently. We got an hilarious bit and some interesting techniques from it.

Meanwhile, Carrie had gone with a couple other Bead Babes to shop for Christine's birthday, which the store is celebrating next Sunday.

I drove home, then Carrie took the car and went to workout. A while after she got home I went to Fred Meyer's for some staples: Cheese, butter, toilet paper, half-&-half. I also got a fresh pineapple for Carrie, which I can't eat on account o' bein' allergic. To make up for that, I spent some of my Christmas moneys and bought Teen Titans - The Complete First and Second Seasons (DC Comics Kids Collection) on the Digital Video Disc format.

I came back and hung out with Carrie for a bit before she drove up to the Lareau homestead to watch the premiere of the new season of The Apprentice with them (the kids, especially Trevor, really like that show). When she came home it was time for bed.

I had to inform Carrie that I couldn't play any Tetris with her that evening. We'd been playing it so much that all during the weekend I was seeing tetris blocks fall wherever I went. It was like that Tootsie Roll commercial, except with Tetris instead. Even during parts of Fools Play on Saturday. It was bad. I need a couple of days off. Instead, I played my Mega Man ZX (which I'm pretty close to beating), then some Animal Crossing: Wild World. Very exciting: I actually saved up $1,200,000 and bought the King's Crown item! Then I ordered the King's Beard, so now I'm running around my town as the King, baby!

Sleepin

Yesterday (Saturday) Carrie & I slept in until 11:00. Whoo-boy, that was nice. We didn't really do much of anything for the rest of the day, either. Some Tetris DS. I clicked around on teh intarwebs. Very lazy.

Fools Play was just a regular exhibition, but it was a huge crowd. It was also a ve'y funny show. Afterwards I said goodbye to everybody, stopped by the Rib Eye just to say hi to the people there, and then went straight home to spend more time with my wife.

Not a terribly bad way to spend a Saturday. Not at all productive, though.

Legally Licensed

Yesterday (Friday) after work I started driving to get Carrie for lunch. She called me and asked if I wanted to meet her and Katie Felesina at Wild Orchid for lunch instead. Of course! 'Twas good to hang out with Katie, who is only back in town for a couple of days. We're gonna have brunch or something on Sunday as well.

After lunch I drove Carrie to a couple of hardware stores so as she could buy butane for the store. You can't speedily ship butane, it turns out, on account of it being a hazardous material (on account of it having really great potential to explode). They needed some for the classes this weekend and they didn't have enough, so they sent Carrie on the errand, and I was her willing chauffeur.

The first place we hit was Fred Meyer, because it had the added bonus of having a bank (where I deposited Christmas money and transferred money around and such-like), and a package of handkerchiefs for my papa's birthday. So several birds with one stone, except for the butane, of which they had none.

So then we hit Home Depot, where we found two canisters (not enough), then Lowe's, where we snagged eight more (enough).

After I dropped her off at the store I came home and... did something or other for about an hour. Can't rightly remember what, other than finishing up Mage: The Hero Defined. Rather disappointing ending, thought I. It is just the middle part of a trilogy, but I thought the climax was rather poorly paced. And lots of weird exposition at the end.

Yeah. Anyway, I picked Carrie up after work and drove her straight to the DMV in south T-town so she could renew her overdue license. Whoops! But now she is able to drive legally again! Hooray! While driving there her cousin called and asked her to be in her wedding in a year... in Ohio. I don't know if we can afford to fly to Ohio, what with recently buying a house and all. We couldn't really have afforded to buy the house if I hadn't gotten a new job and all, and we've got moneys positioned around for various other things. Not for flying to Ohio in a year. So we'll see.

I drove back home (re-tracing my steps around a big ol' detour), then I wrapped my dad's shirt and handkerchiefs while Carrie printed out tonnes of Hello Kitty pictures in case Alexis was going to be at dinner.

She was. At 6:30 (after playing much Tetris DS) we drove up to Akasaka in Federal Way, much like what had happened last year for my dad's birthday. He likes that restaurant. So do I. Carrie had the same thing as last year (blackened cod), while I opted for the sashimi plate. My brother, who only within the last couple of months lost his sushi virginity, had a big sushi plate so he could sample various things and discover what he liked. Things learned:
  • He doesn't like wasabi, so nigiri sushi is pretty much out.
  • He really likes tekka maki

Alexis colored some pictures at the table and passed them out to various people. There were a tonne of leftovers (from everybody except me and Mike; we ate all of our food).

We all headed back to my folks' house for to open presents and enjoy a really excellent carrot cake. At around 10:00 Carrie & I finally headed on home. It was raining like a crazy person most of the day, so the drive home (which Carrie was able to accomplish, what with being legally licensed again and all) wasn't terribly fun. But we made it just fine and played Tetris DS for quite a while before going to sleep.

NOT a Website for an X-Men Character

Yesterday (Thursday) I picked up Carrie straight after work, and we came home and ate some crackers with various dips & cheese balls for a while before Laura came over.

Laura is going to France in about half a week (boo!), and she, like Brandy before her, wanted a website so she could keep those left behind updated on what she was doin' across the pond.

So I helped her to build "Laura's travels"

We had trouble finding login names and stuff like that, because her name, Laura Kinney, just happens to be the name of a very popular X-Men character: X-23, the female clone of Wolverine. Whenever we tried something only to find it wasn't available, we would exclaim, "That damned X-23 girl got it first!"

Carrie made us all some lunch of Mandarin chicken, and then we took a walk over to the Mandolin Café for some tea and/or hot cider. The walk over there was much colder than we'd expected it to be. I mean, it was really nice and sunny out. But the wind had a bite to it.

We all walked back and hung out at our house for a while before Laura left. There were some near-tearful goodbye hugs, because we prolly won't see her again before she goes. Sad!

I took Carrie back to the store to teach her evening class, then I ate some cheese, crackers, and bonky-stick for my din-din before driving out to the mall to return an un-used dress to J.C. Penny's. While I was there, I did some shopping for my dad's birthday (which is today, Friday) and also looked around for myself (though I didn't find anything).

I came home and read the comic book that Lawrence gave me for Solstice: Mage Volume 2: The Hero Defined. After I picked Carrie up from the store, she made us some macaroni, and then we played some Tetris before bed.

First Day

So yesterday (Wednesday) was my first day at my new job! Weird! I get there an hour-and-a-half before Jessica, the other employee, shows up. Karla didn't show up until almost noontime, and I got off at 1:00. All I did all day was web design schtuff. Not a bad gig. I think I'm really going to enjoy it.

I went home for about an hour, then picked up Carrie and Bella the Pug Puppy. We then went over to the Lareaus' house to watch their kids for the night, due to the parents being in California right now. On the drive there we got caught behind this weird, tiny lady who kept on stopping at intersections she didn't have to, to let the cars on the side roads (who actually had stop signs) pull in front of her. Kinda frustrating!

The rest of the day was pretty much uneventful. We all of us played a bunch of Tetris DS. Then Julian went and played World of Warcraft for several hours while the rest of us watched some TV and used the new workout room in what used to be the garage of the house. Pretty cool. Carrie wants to convert a room of our house into a workout room... as soon as we buy a house big enough to have enough spare rooms to convert one into a workout room.

We had soup and grilled cheese sammitches for dinner, but it was with that processed American cheese stuff. It gave me pretty horrible heartburn around bedtime, so I couldn't sleep. I actually ended up going downstairs and reading news articles on Fark and watching videos like this:

I eventually fell asleep around 2:00 AM, though it was not very restful sleep due to the fact that the pug puppy was for some dumb reason never trained not to sleep on the bed. Or not to jump on my face while I'm asleep.

New Year, New Job!

Well, yesterday (Tuesday) around noontime I went down to downtown T-town and got a new job. I'm now working four (4) hours a day at Ever After! My first project is going to be revamping their website. I'm very excited; we needed the extra income to help pay for the house we just bought. I start today (Wednesday)

I picked up Carrie for her split-shift and brought her home, where we had lunch, played some Tetris DS, and took a nap (at least I did).

We swung by Lisa's on the way to the store (even though her house is rather out of the way) to drop off the last of her Tidefest moneys. Then I took Carrie to the store so she could teach her class.

I came home, made a big plate of nachos, and discovered that Comcast is showing Zardoz on demand. How could I resist!? Man-o-man that movie is carrazy! Unfortunately, watching it made me forget all about writing a review for The Holiday, but maybe I'll be able to do that today or tomorrow. We'll see.

I spent the rest of the evening tidying up from the party and doing dishes before Carrie came home. We played a whole bunch of Tetris DS in bed. When I say a whole bunch, I mean about an hour-and-a-half's worth. And Carrie still wanted to play more (even though I'd beat her 21 to 7 or 8)! Heck, Conan O'Brien was over and she still played some Tetris one-player while I fell asleep. I guess it was a pretty good present to get her for Christmas, no?

It Begins

The first day of 2007 (yesterday/Monday), when I finally got up around 10:00 I made some breakfast/brunch for me, Carrie, and Gary (the only person who crashed at our house after the party). What did I make? Why, Hello Kitty waffles using the Hello Kitty Waffle maker, of course! Duh! Carrie also made a big batch of scrambled eggs to go with it.

In the afternoon the three of us just kinda relaxed. Carrie & Gary played many, many games of Tetris DS versus each other. I joined in a couple of times as well, but I also just caught up on some reading and whatnot. Just chillin'. Y'know. Little bit of illin'.

At 3:30 or so we went and saw a movie over at the Galaxy Tacoma 6, which is about five minutes from my house. We went and saw Jack Black in The Holiday. It was a very cheesy romantic comedy, but it was not actively bad in any sense (except for a couple of parts maybe), and Jack Black had his toned-down charm going full swing. Hmmm... methinks I should write my first review of the new year today. Look for it later this evening!

After the movie there were a couple more games of Tetris DS before Gary left. Carrie & I left at the same time; we went to Azteca for din-dins (we had a coupon).

When we got home we put Stick It on in the bedroom, crawled into bed and played many a game of Tetris DS verses each other. I surprised myself by how good I got at it so quickly; back in the days of the Nintendo DS meets I would routinely come in in the bottom three of eight; I beat Carrie about 20 to 6 last night.

Oh, also someone left a jacket/sweater thing here at the party. I'll post a picture whenever Blogger actually lets me (we're still having problems).

Hope y'all had a fun & safe holiday. Welcome to 2007!

"Of the Month" January '07

Link of the Month:
MOG
One of those social-networking sites, but this one revolves only & entirely around music. Download an inoffensive little client, and it will tell MOG what music you have on your computer, and how often you listen to what songs etc. MOG can then automatically find other people who have similar tastes in music. It's pretty spiffy.

Book of the Month:
I Like You by Amy Sedaris
Subtitled "Hospitality Under the Influence," this is a very entertaining book about entertaining. The Sedaris family is some crazy funtimes, and this book is full of fun, tacky, drug-addled party ideas! I especially like the section on how to write an effective party invitation.

Game of the Month:
Mega Man ZX
Set after the Mega Man Zero series, the line between human and android ("reploid" as they're called in the game) has blurred. This game has much of the same Mega Man mechanics that make it work so well, but adds in a more quot;adventure" feel. Instead of selecting levels from a menu, the game world is all interconnected and you have to actually travel to the entrance to each level. Instead of receiving a weapon from a defeated boss, your human character gets a full "biometal" suit of armor with which he/she can merge, and the strength of the biometal you receive depends on how badly you damaged it when you were fighting the boss character that used to use it! Plus, it's a pretty fun game.
