Open Mike Eagle wants to sing to you and show you how he rocks.
Last Friday I trekked up to Seattle to see my pal Open Mike Eagle at the Tractor Tavern. It is a long drive, I admit, but it was completely worth it; it was one of the best sets I’d ever seen Mike do.

It was also fun because a bunch of my Seattle peoples also came out and saw the show, like Three Ninjas, Tangentbot, Rabbiddogg, & Creepy Sheep.
Mike even shouted me out from the stage a couple of times, which was pretty neat-o! He also did a rap song I’d never heard before that actually quotes John Linnell’s (of They Might Be Giants) song “Idaho” from his State Songs solo album. That’s pretty obscure! As soon as he started singing the lyrics, Rabbiddogg & I immediately recognized them and looked at each other in amazement. Afterwards when we were talking to Mike he was pretty impressed that we knew it as well!
So it was a great night, great to see Mike and hear his amazing rap songs live, great to hang out with great people. Just… great. And since this is me we’re talking about, I made a really not-great animated GIF of Mike doin’ his thang:

Thanks, crappy cell phone camera! Man, I really need to get a new phone. If anybody wants to get me the Google Nexus 4 for Christmas I would NOT complain.

Photo by Bryce David, who is not a Jeep Pervert as far as I know.
On Wednesday night I had a very funny dream. This was one of those dreams that I’m not even in. It’s like there’s a movie playing in my head, complete with camera angles and edits. Here’s how this one went:
Two men have pulled a successful heist and have gotten away with a bunch of money in their SUV. One of them is a little older & grizzled, kinda like James Caan how he looked in the 1990s, but maybe a bit leaner. The other guy is a taller, wiry, and slightly balding redhead with short-shorn hair and a goatee. He looks kinda like a cross between first-season-Mythbusters Adam Savage and Jesse Tyler Ferguson from Modern Family.
The two are traversing the back roads of the American Southwest on their way to Mexico. In order to avoid any chance of exposure, they decide not to stop at gas stations to refuel, and only to siphon gas from parked vehicles. They discover that many cars nowadays don’t have easy access to the gas cap; you have to break into the car and pull a little lever to open the gas cap. This is an unacceptable risk to the two thieves.
But they soon discover that Jeeps have completely-exposed gas caps, so they pledge to siphon gas from nothing but Jeeps from here on out.
They successfully suck gas from Jeeps in the middle of the night and continue south for an entire day until they get low on gas again. It gets dark, and then they find a poorly-lit (but huge) parking lot that is behind some sort of bar or maybe a casino. Cars frequently come and go, even in the middle of the night, but it would be easy to hide from view and siphon the gas from a Jeep. Unfortunately there are none in the parking lot!
The two decide to settle in for a stakeout. The Grizzled Guy wants to sleep first, so he makes the Wiry Ginger keep first watch.
Be sure to wake me if you see a Jeep pull in.
Sure thing! No problem!
Grizzled Guy promptly dozes off. Wiry Guy takes his task seriously, and intensely and with high-energy watches for any possible sign of a Jeep entering the parking lot. He is seriously wired, bouncing up and down in his seat, his bugged-out eyes darting back and forth at any sign of movement. He is grinning like an idiot, so excited at the possibility of seeing a Jeep.
Finally, not one but TWO Jeeps independently pull into the parking lot. Wiry Guy squeals and bounces up and down in his seat, over-vigorously shaking Grizzled Guy away. Grizzled guy opens his eyes.
Two Jeeps! TWO JEEPS!!
Grizzled Guy groggily looks at just how overly-excited Wiry Guy is at seeing two jeeps. He shoves Wiry Guy’s hands away from him.
What are you, a Jeep Pervert?
At this point I woke up laughing. I couldn’t believe my dream people came up with the phrase “Jeep Pervert.”

Damn, that’s a handsome man.
Hooray! My pal Open Mike Eagle is returning to Seattle, and I actually have a chance to see him perform!
He will be at the Tractor Tavern (yes, I do seem to go there quite a bit, eh?) tomorrow, Friday the 27th of September 2013. He isn’t the headliner, though; that honor goes to Buck 65, a Canadian alt-rap musician with a 20-year pedigree. Yes, there is such a thing!
I’m going to do my durnednest to be there, and Carrie is also going to try her durnednest! But as always at eight months preggers, we’ll see how she’s actually feeling come time to drive up to Seattle. See you there!
Is this blog becoming mostly just a calendar of concerts/shows for musicians I like? Maybe! Tough!

Garage Voice AMENIN Album Release
This coming Thursday 9/26 The Jesus Rehab will be joining Garage Voice as they release their new album “AMENIN” at the very beautiful Columbia City Theater (where I last saw Julia Massey, Mary Lambert, Shenandoah Davis, and a bunch of other talented ladies). Here is the Facebook event for the show.
Who is Garage Voice? Garage Voice is a local musical trio that is a fascinating fusion of crunchy, indie, Seattle-style garage rock, Memphis soul, and old-fashioned Gospel music. Seriously!
I was actually given a preview copy of “AMENIN” to listen to and it is some catchy stuff. This isn’t one of those Christian rock bands where they’re basically only trying to do missionary outreach stuff and think, “Hey, kids today seem to like the rock-and-roll music; why don’t we make some of that so they’ll listen to our message?” These songs, though they have religious/gospel overtones, are much more musically adept and are really about making good music rather than about trying to sneak some religion into heathen kids’ lives. Can you tell I have a big pet peeve about that? Well, you don’t have to worry about it with Garage Voice. Even if you don’t like Gospel’s good-news lyrics, you can still listen to Garage Voice’s good musics.
Don’t take my word for it; here’s a preview video Garage Voice made for “AMENIN”
TL;DR: If you can, you should probably check out the show.

Last Friday the 20th was Julia Massey’s single release party for the epic song “The Story of the Earth, So Far.” It was a pretty epic show, opened by the Summer Januaries and Pocket Panda.
As is my habit with JM+FFD shows recently, I took a bunch of crappy cell phone photos and let Google stitch them together into animated gifs! Unfortunately my location in the crowd didn’t afford me a good angle to get all 3 members of the band in the photos (Dom is kinda hidden behind Julia). Nonetheless they are pretty epic themselves. Let them load completely and enjoy:
A typical scene: Geoff fiddles with his pedal board while Julia rocks out.
You can kinda see Dom’s head peek out from behind Julia in this one…
JM+FFD are next gonna be at Conor Byrne in Ballard on October 12th. I probably won’t be at that one, what with it being a Saturday night (not to mention an impending baby). But you shouldst go!

A new video has just been released for Gavin Guss‘s song “Avenue A” from his “On High” album (an Album of the Month earlier this year). It’s a very funny stop-motion romp that includes addict fauna, peeping-Tom shenanigans, and many cardboard buildings. And although the visuals don’t have much of anything to do with the lyrics, it’s very enjoyable. Take a wook:
Gavin is no stranger to video production, having created the cult public-access TV show “Gavin’s Howse” in the (very) early 1990s, which was one of the main inspirations for our “Under the Mailbox Theater” TV show. Neat!

This Friday the 20th of September, Julia Massey and the Five Finger Discount have a show at the High Dive in Seattle. The purpose of that show is to release their newest single, “The Story of the Earth (So Far)”
Haven’t heard that particular song? WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU!? They did it live on KEXP a while back. Watch, listen, and learn:
As a side note, I love the fact that Geoff (the guitarist) is wearing an Open Mike Eagle t-shirt in that KEXP video. Open Mike Eagle, by the way, has a show in Seattle next Friday the 27th of September at Tractor Tavern in Ballard!
