Spirit▴Shrine & windowsninetyfivesecondedition This Saturday Night!

DANCE&DIE@LEVOYEUR

DANCE&DIE@LEVOYEUR

So this Saturday night there is a musics show in Olympia featuring a couple of my friends. First off we have my friend Tangentbot performing his SPIRIT▴SHRINE project (Dark Electronica).

Then we also have Tangentbot teaming up with my pal Extropic Engine as WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION (Ambient Industrial).

Here’s a SPIRIT▴SHRINE track for your listening pleasure:

They’ll be joined by a couple of other music acts: Urban Fantasy (hip-hop/synth-pop) and Kim Jong Illin’ (solo acoustic crust punk).

I am so totally going to go to this show. I know what you’re thinking: but Chris Harris the Purple Fool, this musics show is on a Saturday night! You won’t be able to go because you always perform at Fools Play on Saturday nights.

Well, you’re WRONG. Okay, you’re right about the fact that I’ll be performing at Fools Play this Saturday night. But this musics show doesn’t start until 10:00 PM, which just so happens to be when Fools Play ends! So I’ll be peforming at Fools Play and then booking it the two or three blocks up the street to Le Voyeur to watch some musics happen in front of my very eyes and earses!

SO CAN YOU!

Details:
$AT.8/2-DANCE&DIE@LEVOYEUR (Facebook event)
Saturday, August 2nd 10:00 PM
@ Le Voyeur
404 4th Ave E, Olympia, WA 98501 (map)
FREE (but donations accepted), 21+

Originally The Old Salt was going to be a part of WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION’s set, but I believe he’s going to have to miss it because he’ll be up in Bellingham being naked onstage in a play. You know how it is.

New Movie Review: The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Keep your hands off my lobby boy!

Keep your hands off my lobby boy!

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014): ★★★½

Directed by Wes Anderson

What a glorious, weird, artificial and joyful film this is. If you’ve seen other Wes Anderson films, the style and much of the trappings will seem intimately familiar. Like The Royal Tenenbaums, this is a film about an ensemble of oddball figures orbiting around one central, lovable oddball. Like all his films, there is very deliberate and nostalgic art direction, frame composition, and camerawork. As is usual for Anderson, he creates a giddily rich visual tapestry, delving with fetishistic verve into the tiniest minutiae of his settings. More… »

For Your Weekend Viewing Pleasure: Japanese Dr. Who vs Dalekor!

Doctor... who? No, for reals, who?

Doctor… who? No, for reals, who?

A funny little something I found and thought all y’all would enjoy. It’s a parody of a particular brand of low-budget Japanese superhero Tokusatsu-style action show, crossed with Dr. Who. Go on, try it; you’ll like it:

There are many great things about this, such as the fact that Dr. Who has a transformation sequence, all the horrible jump-to-teleport special effects, and the Cyber Men as the putty-style minions of Dalekor. I particularly enjoy the “found footage” aspect of it, as if someone just randomly found this on VHS and decided to put it on Youtube.

The people who made it are obviously skilled, and seem like they have great fondness for both sources of their inspiration. Bravo!

Dalekor is fiendish indeed.

Protect This Place with Julia Massey!

Julia Massey & the Five Finger Discount at Columbia City Theater!

Julia Massey & the Five Finger Discount’s new video, live at Columbia City Theater!

Remember back in May when Carrie & I went and saw Julia Massey & the Five Finger Discount perform at Columbia City Theater?

Well, JM+FFD had one of their songs, “Protect This Place” professionally filmed by the people who are making the motion picture Winning Dad. And that’s because JM+FFD wrote the soundtrack to Winning Dad. Here is the resulting video!

A couple of neat things about this video:

  1. Carrie & I are in this video! Since we were in the crowd when it was filmed, it only makes sense. We’re kinda hard to make out, but Carrie is wearing a red glow stick like a crown and I’m wearing a purple (of course) glow stick around my neck. Look!

    Here we are!

    Here we are!

  2. This video offers a rare glimpse at bass-player Geoff B. Gibbs’s massive pedal board! Just lookit this thing:
    Feet don't fail me now!

    Feet don’t fail me now!

And also neat is the song itself! I’m excited for this movie soundtrack to come out! YIKES!

Happy 4th of July! Be Safe or You Might Need the Rescue Weens!

If you’re planning on doing anything with fireworks on this 4th of July, please be careful. You don’t want to accidentally start a fire. You don’t want to have the Rescue Weens come try to save you.

For some reason this makes me giggle like mad whenever I see it.

Tee-hee! Them li’l Rescue Weens! They’re so cute, maybe you do want to start a fire…
