Christmastime Adventure in Downtown Seattle 2016

Animated Avery!

Animated Avery!

Last Sunday we three in the fam went on a fun excursion to Downtown Seattle for the afternoon. Here’s what we did:

  • Parked beneath Pacific Place. Parking there is only $6 on Sundays!
  • Walked out through Barnes & Nobles and down 5th Ave (with quick stops in Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters) to our first stop:

The Fairmont Hotel

At the Fairmont Hotel lobby.

The Fairmont does this thing where they completely deck out a suite with Christmas stuff and metric tonnes of teddy bears. They call it the Teddy Bear Suite. Behold the cuteness:

Merry Christmas Eve Eve 2015

Merry Christmas Eve Eve from me and Totoro!

King of the forest? King of my shirt!

King of the forest? King of my shirt!

And, of course, Mary Christmas Eve Eve from Paul & Storm, the only musicians to my knowledge who have written a song about Christmas Eve Eve:

Catch Some Holiday Cheer!

It’s crunch time: we’re down to the last couple of days before that big Chrissymiss holiday that I hear a bunch about. It’s easy to get all stress-ified this time of year, so it’s always important to seek out some holiday cheer. Here are some suggestions of mine on how to find the cheer this year:

Enjoy Some Holiday Lights

Merry Christmas from Zoolights, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s annual holiday celebration where they dress up the zoo with millions of Christmas lights in all sorts of Christmassy displays! What could be more Christmassy than these:

Christmas Scorpions!

Christmas Scorpions!

The Christmas Spider!

The Christmas Spider!

Well, I can’t say that I’m too familiar with the Christmas Scorpions and Spiders… but I guess they might help put you in the mood? How about we look at some lights that remind us of the savior for whom this holiday is really celebrated:

Our Lord and Savior, Cthulhu!

Our Dread Lord and Savior, Cthulhu!

If that doesn’t put you in the holiday mood of cheer, how about…

Listen to Some Holiday Music

Musician Three Ninjas has put out a little holiday EP! With songs titles like “Joy & Goodwill,” “The Birth of Our Savior (is the Death of my Dream),” and “It’s an Agonizingly Slow Death,” this is sure to coat you liberally in some holiday cheer:

Hmm… maybe depressing country music isn’t your thing this time of year? Well, how about music from world-renowned, highly-honored actor and performer Sir Christopher Lee?

Wow, that’s some really hardcore death metal, isn’t it? Maybe you should download Sir Christopher’s latest song, “Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing” here and listen to it over and over again at full volume to blast some holiday cheer into your ear.

No? Let’s try…

Watch Some Made-For-TV Holiday Movies

What could be more heartwarming than some good ol’ made-for-TV movies about the holidays? Luckily for us Twitter user @audipenny has watched them all for you and has reviewed them here. Here’s a sample of what you can enjoy:

A Rake That Was A Manger Too

Named 2009’s “What Is This. No Seriously What” film of the year, a small-town rake drives, yes drives, into town and proves to everyone that rakes that drive cars into towns can also be outside rooms where Jesuses are born, god my head never stops hurting, do you think there is a baby in there

Sound good? No? You should read through the rest of them.

Still not feeling the holiday spirit? Feeling more of a horrorday spirit? Well, there’s always one thing you can do: put the power in your own hands by creating your own holiday cheer from scratch…

Make Some Holiday Snowflakes

Make your own paper snowflakes. Don’t know how? You’re in luck because I wrote a detailed tutorial a few years ago. You can make beautiful snowflakes like this:

The World Devourer

The Snowflake Devourer

If the threat of world annihilation from Galactus, the dreaded World Devourer doesn’t make you feel some holiday cheer, then I don’t know what will.

HAPPY HOLIDAYSES 2014!

“Of the Month” December 2014

Link of the Month:
Amazon Wishlist
My Amazon Wish List!

That’s right! You think in this, the most wonderful time of the year, that I’d waste my one-and-only link of the month on something selfless? EFF THAT! I want you to click on this link and buy crap for me! Crass commercialism EFF-TEE-DUBYA, baby! Mwa-ha-ha-haaaaaaaa!

Holiday Special of the Month:
PnSxMas
The Paul and Storm Nondenominational Perennial Holiday Special – Part One

An animated holiday special written and performed by comedy musical duo Paul and Storm, with animation by those guys who did Homestar Runner? Hmmm… yeah, that does sound good to me. It’s a special about Cyber Monday and its surprisingly Jamaican mascot, Cyber-Mon. And the villain is a small business owner (voiced by Matt Chapman of Strong Bad fame) who does a delightful riff on the “Miser” songs from “The Year Without a Santa Claus.” What’s that? Why, yes, of course you can watch it right here:

And speaking of Paul and Storm and the holidays…

Album of the Month:
PaulNStormItMightBeChristmas
Paul and Storm: It Might Be Xmas

You see, folks, WAY back in 2009 Paul and Storm did something rather remarkable. For 8 consecutive days they released an original holiday song in the style of They Might Be Giants. And, boy howdy, did they ever nail it. These are the most TMBG-ish songs out there. You can hear specific TMBG song influences in each P&S-penned tune, and it really helps that they can do an absolutely uncanny impression of John Flansburgh. And, blessedly, they learned a thing from TMBG about keeping the songs short and sweet. They get in, state their business, and get out. It’s funny and frighteningly accurate holiday fun.

Have a Depressing Christmas with Three Ninjas!

Three Ninjas IS Christmas.

Three Ninjas IS Christmas.

For the past couple of years, underground Seattle record label Green Monkey Records has put out compilation Christmas albums that have included original Christmas songs by Three Ninjas. Threeni did them in his old-school-country style, so, true to the genre, they aren’t exactly the happiest of yuletide tunes. So here’s the latest depressing Christmas song from Three Ninjas! It’s called “Joy & Goodwill” and is about lotsa killin’ yerself:

It goes pretty well with the song that he made last year for that year’s Christmas compilation with the help of Lee Rude, called “The Birth Of Our Savior (Is the Death of My Dream)”

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

“Of the Month” December 2013

Link of the Month:
christmasagogo Christmas A-GoGo
We love Christmas. We love Christmas songs, but not the usual stuff. See this blog in Nov and December for daily posts of weird & wondrous seasonal tunes.

Tweeter of the Month:
loaded santa @loadedsanta
There are a few “joke” Santa twitter accounts, but this one is probably my favorite, from the POV of a very inebriated Santa Claus. Some of my favorite examples:

Christmas Special of the Month:
Adventure Time: Holly Jolly Secrets Adventure Time: “Holly Jolly Secrets”
Even though Christmas is never mentioned by name, all of the trappings are there in this two-part episode from the 3rd season of Adventure Time. We get some great backstory on the Ice King, and there are some real heart-felt moments. What’s that? The 3rd season of Adventure Time isn’t available on DVD or BluRay? Well, don’t worry; it comes out in February and you can pre-order it now!
