New Movie Review: Muppets Most Wanted (2014)

Muppets Most Wanted

Hi-ho, Kyer-mit thee Frog heere

Muppets Most Wanted (2014): ★★★

Directed by James Bobin

The previous Muppet movie (The Muppets (2012)) banked its appeal on being absolutely drenched in nostalgia. It was for lapsed Muppet lovers, adult children who loved these characters when they were kids who could now share it with their own kids. It had heart and sweetness and, like the original Muppet Movie, a genuinely moving story.

Muppets Most Wanted doesn’t have the advantage of access to all that nostalgia; the previous film is only a couple of years old, so what is there to be nostalgic about? So instead it goes a different direction: with a wink and a shrug it eschews all the feely-feely nostalgia and goes straight for the laughs. And it is funny. Great gravy, is it funny. This might be the overall-funniest Muppet movie yet made.

New Movie Review: Frozen (2013)

Let it go...

Let it go…

Frozen (2013): ***½

Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee

In very many ways a spiritual successor to Disney’s Tangled, Frozen takes many very similar elements and improves on most all of them. It also does an excellent job of taking many familiar tropes of fairy tales and twisting them in clever and new ways. I don’t like to review movies by comparing them to other movies, but Frozen really does make Tangled seem like a rough draft in many ways. More… »

New Movie Review: Les Misérables (2012)

Les Miserables (2012)

Do You Hear the People Sing… Live?

Les Misérables (2012): **½

Directed by Tom Hoopper

This film version of Les Misérables is full of fantastic, balls-to-the-wall performances. Unfortunately the movie surrounding them is kind of a disjointed, herky-jerky mess. More… »

New Review: The Hobbit (2012)

The Hobbit (2012)

The Greatest Adventure is What Lies Ahead…

I know this film has been getting a lot of backlash, and I guess I can kind of see why. But I really enjoyed it. And anyway, I’m not here to conjecture about other opinions. I’m here to give my own. I thought it was a lot of fun, nicely silly, and really beautiful to watch. [Read my full review]

New Review: Skyfall (2012)

Skyfall (2012)

Breaking Bond

There was a point early on in Skyfall when I realized that I was watching something special. And steadily throughout the rest of the film a certain feeling steadily grew. Skyfall is an astonishing movie. Not just astonishing for a James Bond movie, but astonishing, period. It is the epitome of a four-star movie and by leaps and bounds my favorite film of 2012. New Review: Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

Wreck-It Ralph

I’m gonna wreck it!

Wreck-It Ralph is kind of a minor masterpiece. It is bright, wickedly funny, smart, and has a good heart. Even though it isn’t a Pixar movie, it joins a long line of movies that anthropomorphize inhuman things and endow them with a life they really do not have: Toys, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc., Cars, Wall-E. It also joins that line with being incredibly drenched in nostalgia. [Read my full review]

New Review: Looper (2012)

Looper

“Your face looks backwards.”

Looper is a time-travel story, and those have a tendency to go a bit pear-shaped. Time travel is a tricky thing (just look at my two articles about it here and here), and it is so easy to get bogged down by rules and get caught up in too many paradoxes, or alternately to get extremely sloppy to the point that everything is rather arbitrary (*cough* Doctor Who *cough*). Looper takes a novel approach to time travel, one I hadn’t quite seen before, and as near as I can tell is internally consistent enough. And on top of that it’s a good movie. [Read my full review]
