Trevor Peach Has Got You Covered

...SONG covered, that is! Get it?

…SONG covered, that is! Get it?

The Fourth volume of Trevor Peach’s one-song-a-week project (AKA “Squandered Promise of a Wasted Year”) has begun, and this one is a pretty awexome hum-dinger. In his previous volume he did remakes of some of his own “classic” songs. But in this volume he is going to be putting his own spin on other musicians’ songs with a series of cover songs! He’s released the track list, and it includes some delightfully surprising and bizarre choices. Here they all are (and you can listen to them all) right here:

1. Black Sparrow – J Hacha De Zola

2. Your Mother Doesn’t Love You – Jason Brunet

3. Long Way To Fall – The Electric NoNo

4. Jesus, Friend of Sinners – Joshua Stephens

5. First 48 – Chris Blount

6. Secret Squirrel – Robb Benson

7. Nightmares – Open Mike Eagle

8. Nightmares – The Hoot Hoots

9. Blueberries – Julia Massey

10. Shake – The Great UM

11. White Whale – Kid in the Attic

12. Mr. Boots – Incanus

13. Dada Pops – Chubby Mummy

Volume IV marks a musical departure from the previous three volumes as well, because they’re not being produced by Geoff B. Gibbs. They’re being produced by Vincent Fresco. That’s right: the Vincent Fresco who produced Trevor Peach’s very first EP back 12 years ago!

The first cover has already been released. You can take a wissen right here:

I’m particularly excited to see how Trevor and Vincent handle Open Mike Eagle’s hip-hop and Chubby Mummy’s general incompetence. Also, there are rumors that there might be a couple of bonus tracks that aren’t listed here. There’s some exciting things in the pipeline from Trevor Peach this summer FO SHO.

My Famous Friends: The Ginger Fool is a Grimm-Hunting Wettbewerbsgewinner!

Yes, I'm ready! Jamie Pederson the Ginger Fool in NBC's Grimm.

Yes, I’m ready!

YES! Fools Play Improv’s very own Ginger Fool, Jamie Pederson, has appeared in the recurring role of “Ludwig the Wettbewerbsgewinner” on NBC’s long-running supernatural police show, Grimm.

For those not in the know: Grimm (briefly) is about a Portland police officer who is a “Grimm,” a person with the ability to see monstrous people (“Wesen”) who are hiding amongst humanity, disguised as humans. The Grimm’s traditional role is to hunt these Wesen, so they don’t like him very much.

Jamie appeared briefly in episode 99 of Grimm as a thug in the service of some badguy Wesen priest who wants to stop the Grimm from finding an ancient treasure. Is Ludwig (and his associate Dolph) ready for such a task?

Jamie Pederson is ready for action on NBC's Grimm.

I guess so!

Oh, why are Jamie’s lines subtitled? Because these scenes take place in Germany and Jamie is speaking in German. No biggie.

Unfortunately at the end of the episode it looks like Ludwig and Dolph have just been tasked with guarding the badguy posse’s cars while they hunt for the Grimm.

So. Much. Action. I see why they had to be ready.

So. Much. Action. I see why they had to be ready.

But in episode 100, Ludwig and Dolph get tricked into leaving their post by a Wesen friend of the Grimm, and they run off to help the priest, who they think is being attacked by said Grimm.

Don't fall for it, Ludwig! It's a trick!

Don’t fall for it, Ludwig! It’s a trick!

Upon catching up with the priest, they quickly realize they’ve been tricked!

Verify your sources, Ludwig!

Verify your sources, Ludwig!

Ludwig and Dolph are so pissed off that they were tricked that they transform into their true “Wettbewerbsgewinner” Wesen form, then set off to hunt the Grimm! I, of course, made an animated .GIF of that transformation:

From ginger to lizard thanks to CGI goodness!

Here’s a still of Ludwig in his Wettbewerbsgewinner form:

Wettbewerbsgewinner

Wettbewerbsgewinner!

Unfortunately when they get back to their vehicles they discover the Grimm has disabled them all and they are unable to pursue. Grimm & friend make it safely back to Portland without incident.

There is actually a cool story behind the Wettbewerbsgewinner Wesen. “Wettbewerbsgewinner” is German for “Contest winner.” To commemorate the upcoming 100th episode of Grimm, NBC ran a contest where fans could design their own Wesen, and the chosen winner would appear on the 100th episode!

So, yes, Jamie transforms into a monster designed by a fan! That’s a pretty special thing. Here’s the original concept art that won the contest:

As found HERE.

Will Ludwig & Dolph ever catch up with the Grimm and take back what was stolen? Or is that the last we see of them, helplessly looking at flat tires? I guess you should watch Grimm or something if you wanna find out; I have no idea.

I don't know.

I don’t know.

What I do know is that you should watch the two episodes featuring the Ginger Fool! You can watch ’em on the NBC webbed-site:
• Episode 99: “Key Move
• Episode 100: “Into the Schwarzwald

Partake and enjoy! And congrats, Jamie! Now we’ve seen you get eaten by cannibals and zombies and turn into a monster using CGI!

PROOF THAT IT HAPPENED!

And as if that weren’t enough a photo of the Ginger fool is on the cover of the Weekly Volcano. See, he’s not only on the TeleVision, he’s also on stage in “Death on the Supermarket Shelf,” a musical about the 1982 Chicago Tylenol murders.

Go, Jamie, Go! Get hugged from behind live on stage!

Go, Jamie, Go! Get hugged from behind live on stage!

“Death on the Supermarket Shelf” is running every Friday & Saturday this month at the Centerstage Theater in Federal Way. See it if you can!

My Famous Friends: Jessi is 60 Gorgeous German Scientists!

Gorgeous enough for 60 women!

Gorgeous enough for 60 women!

My pal Jessi appeared in an episode of the comedy sci-fi webseries Dead Drift! In the series a man’s wife died and he was so distraught that he created 60 identical clones of her as his “daughters” (all played by Jessi). They’re described in one episode as “60 gorgeous German scientists.” DAMN RIGHT. You can watch her first on-screen appearance in Episode 5 as Ellen Schneider here:

You should prolly watch Dead Drift from the beginning, too. Oh, and also watch the new episodes as they’re released! Dooooo iiiiiit. I do hope that as the series progresses we get to see more than just one of these 60 gorgeous women.

Hellz Yeah

My Famous Friends: Julia Massey + FFD & Electric NoNo on TV!

Band in Seattle: JM+FFD&ENN

Hey, I know these guys!

Last Saturday a bunch o’ my friends were on TV!

That’s right: Jared & Dom of Electric NoNo (formerly The Jesus Rehab) and Julia, Dom (the same Dom), & Matt of Julia Massey and the Five Finger Discount were all featured on the CW11/KSTW TV show “Band in Seattle.” Yes, the same “Band in Seattle” that just happens to be my TV Show of the Month right now. Coincidence? You decide!

You can watch the entire episode on the YouTubes. The behind-the-scenes interviews are rather charming. Mostly because my friends are rather charming.

If you’re interested in watching the entire concerts, and not just edited-down versions, you’re in luck there my friends! Here are the complete songs from each of the groups:

And as an added bonus, you can see me in the audience a couple o’ times:

My Favorite Comic-Con Moments 2015

So San Diego Comic-Con is over, and there were lots of big announcements and blah-blah-blah Star Wars blah-blah-blah Batman v. Superman blah-blah X-Men Apocalypse blah-blah. You already know all about all of those, so I ain’t gunna get into ’em.

These are the things that happened at Comic-Con that I really enjoyed:

Junior Braves of the Apocalypse

A friend of mine had a comic book signing at Comic-Con. I still can’t get over that!

A FOOL DOES SOMETHING AWESOME: Congratulations to Michael Tanner, AKA the retired GREEN FOOL (on the right with the…

I mean, comicbookresources.com even did previews of this book. Hooray Michael Tanner! I <3 my famous friends.

Conan Goes to Comic-Con

The opening segment of Conan O’Brien’s week of shows filmed at Comic-Con was undoubtably the best part:

Joss Whedon’s Twist

Now that Joss Whedon is no longer the shepherd of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has time to do projects for himself for a change! First up: an original comic book about an original character:

Joss Whedon's Twist

Joss Whedon’s Twist

Joss Whedon had (unsurprisingly) my favorite single quote of the whole weekend when he described the book:

Basically deals with the most important moral question facing us, which is, why isn’t there a Victorian Female Batman? [1]

Steven Universe Extended Theme Song

There was a Steven Universe panel. And this happened:

I made the mistake of watching that during my lunch break at work last week. Fortunately no one else was around, so I didn’t have to explain that I was crying about a cartoon.

Marceline Sings!

There was an Adventure Time panel, which also contained Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Steven Universe. See, she worked on Adventure Time before starting Steven Universe, and she wrote a bunch of the most memorable songs for them. And she’s written a new song for Marceline. Whose voice actress, Olivia Olson, also just happened to be on the panel. So, y’know, she helped out:

Ash vs Evil Dead

I do believe this speaks for itself. Let me know if you’re confused about anything:

Wrongplayed

And, of course, one of my favorite Instagram accounts: Wrongplayed, that purposefully (and hilariously) misidentifies the various cosplay of the con:

I AM GROOT! #marvel #hookedonafeeling #vindiesel #wrongplay

A post shared by Greg and Mike (@wrongplayed) on

So that’s what I enjoyed and/or am looking forward to. How about you?

Where Have You Been, Young Man?

Where have I been?

I haven’t written anything for this here website sing I did the “Of the Month” of June (many days late I might add). What gives?

Well, I must confess: I have been writing. Just not here. Instead…

Oni Press Open Submissions!

Oni Press Open Submissions!

I was writing a comic book pitch to submit to Oni Press’s Open Submissions!

Yes, that Oni Press, the comic book company that originally published Scott Pilgrim, and that is currently publishing Junior Braves of the Apocalypse, the comic book co-written by my pal (and retired Green Fool) Michael Tanner:

The Green Fool writes comics. Why not the Purple Fool...?

The Green Fool writes comics. Why not the Purple Fool…?

So we’ll see! If they like it, there might just be two Fools who are writing comics in 2015.

There’s one thing for sure, though: I like it. And I don’t just mean the pitch that I sent. I mean the process of writing something more than a blog post or an article or a movie review (which I haven’t done in over a year now).

I’ve always really enjoyed writing. One of my favorite days in college was when I wrote over 100 pages of a screenplay in one day. Writing little things for this website and doing Fools Play have kinda kept a lid on my creative cravings for the past many years, but now it’s becoming an itch that must be scratched. I feel I have to write something. Something real and substantial.

So I’m going to take the month of July off from doing anything seriously creative (which means you might get some more posts on this here website), but starting in August I’m going to back off from thisischris.com again to concentrate my creative energies in a different direction.

So in conclusion: read and then pre-order Junior Braves of the Apocalypse by Michael Tanner & Greg Smith.

My Famous Friends: The Pink Fool vs Amazon eTextbooks!

Jake, you're doing it wrong!

Jake, you’re doing it wrong!

My pal Jake (aka the retired Pink Fool of Fools Play Improv) recently starred in a series of funny advertisements for Amazon’s new(ish) eTextbook service! They’re kind of a “Goofus & Gallant” series, where it shows the wrong way to do things, then the right way to do things (which always happens to be Amazon eTextbooks—weird how that works out). Guess who consistently portrays the wrong way to do things:

Oh, Jake, will you ever learn? Other than by using Amazon eTextbooks, I guess…
