My Famous Friends: The Ginger Fool Becomes a Citizen of the Z Nation!

Jamie is Fame-y!

Jamie is Fame-y!

Whelp, things rarely get more awexome than this. Fools Play Improv’s own Ginger Fool, Jamie Pederson, had a guest-starring role in last Friday’s episode of SyFy’s zombie TV Show, Z Nation.

And it wasn’t just some background zombie part or extra. It’s a featured speaking role; in fact, the first non-main character you see in the episode! And his character is kind of a badass, drinkin’ beers and getting frisky with the ladies…

Jamie likes his beers... almost as much as he likes his womens.

Jamie likes his beers… almost as much as he likes his womens.

Ginger action!

Ginger action!

Plus he get’s a full-fledged fight scene while shirtless! Come on!

Jamie likes his beers... broken on your skull!

Just lookit our Ginger Fool bein’ badass:

Don't make the Ginger Fool angry... you wouldn't like him when he's angry...

Don’t make the Ginger Fool angry… you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry…

The unfortunate thing is that Z Nation is of course a zombie show, and Jamie is only guest-starring on one episode… and when someone only appears in one episode of a zombie show it’s a pretty good bet they don’t do so well in it. So I don’t think it’s too much of a spoiler to say that things don’t go very well for Jamie. In fact, they go a bit like this:

That don't look so good.

That don’t look so good.

Y’know what I’d love? I’d love it if that image became a meme! Here, I’ll do the first one:

Make it a meme!

Make it a meme!

But still, the congratumaphone is ringing off the hook, and it’s for the Ginger Fool. Great job! You can watch the entire episode (and you should) entitled “Philly Feast” on SyFy’s website. Strangely, you have to login to your cable provider before they’ll let you watch it. You all remember your cable provider’s website login, right? Right!?

At any rate, Jamie is official now: he has his own IMDB page and everything!

Now go watch the Ginger Fool in action!

Animated Spirit Windows

As threatened, last Saturday night after Fools Play I went to Le Voyeur to watch my friends do the musics. As is my nature, I made some animated .GIFs of the evening.

First off was my friend Tangentbot performing his SPIRIT▴SHRINE project. Take a look!

Spirite[triangle]Shrine

Spirite[triangle]Shrine

Y’know, perhaps animated .GIFs of DJ sets aren’t the most exciting, eh?

After SPIRIT▴SHRINE came Urban Fantasy, a keyboardist and rapper. This was their first-ever live public performance. They explained that they usually have a third member, but she wasn’t there because she was suffering from “the consumption” like you get in the Oregon Trail video game. That was funny. I didn’t get a .GIF of them.

At the end of their set my friend @KowaiHitsuji excused herself to the restroom to get ready for WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION‘s set, which she was going to take part in. When she left @extropic_engine turned to me and asked if I was aware of what getting ready entailed. I said I didn’t, and he urged me to wait and see.

When @KowaiHitsuji emerged from the restroom she was dressed thusly:

That's not a Creepy Sheep, it's a Totoro!

That’s not a Creepy Sheep, it’s a Totoro!

And it was thusly that she performed with WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION:

Sing me a song, Totoro.

Sing me a song, Totoro.

As usual, Le Voyeur and its audience was its own weird self, but I enjoyed to see this show. I don’t think they’re performing again until September sometime (you can look at my calendar to see updates about that).

Julia Massey & The West at Columbia City Theater

Musical Ladies: The West and JMass!

Musical Ladies: The West and JM+FFD!

On Friday evening Carrie & I left the wee beb with the Grandparents and jetted on up to Seattle’s Columbia City Theater to see our friends do some of the rock and roll. And I took photos!

We arrived late enough that we only got to hear a couple of songs from the opening band, Bandolier, so apologies to them but I didn’t hear enough to really give them a fair review. Sounded good, though. You can listen to their musics on the Bandcamp.

Up next was The West. I’d only vaguely known of their existence prior to this. I think I saw their name on various show flyers around Seattle and on some Facebook events. But I knew nothing about them.

Turns out they are a very talented pop/rock/disco/dance quintet: guitar, bass, drums, and two keyboards (including a very cool Korg) and two vocalists, a husband-and-wife team (who are also the two keyboardists). Adrienne (pictured at the top left of this post), had a super-engaging stage presence and spent the whole set rockin’ out with her punkish outfit and fiery mop of red hair. They put on a very enjoyable show, so Carrie & I were really happy we got there in time to see them.

Plus, I made an animated GIF of them! Look at them go:

Speaking of stage presence, Julia Massey was up next. Their set included the song they wrote for my baby daughter! Squee! I got some pretty good photos of them individually:

I tried to make an animated GIF out of Julia, but the series of photos I took were just too wobbly and it came out all crazy. So instead I made an Instagram video of Geoff playing the bass. My cameraphone couldn’t handle the volume of the music, so it sounds pretty crazy, but just look at Geoff’s hands go:

One of Julia’s songs was also filmed for some sort of video, so there’s a really good chance that Carrie I will be in it! I’ll keep you posted on that as I learn more myself.

At the end of the night I purchased The West’s album In Low Light on CD and showed the animated GIF to Adrienne. I posted it on their Facebook page when we got home, and they seemed pretty impressed:

Hooray! I’m SOMEONE!

Three Ninjas & Joshua Stephens as Animated .GIFs!

Tuesday night I went up to Three Ninjas’s Album Release Party for his newest album, Alcohol & Isolation. His opening act was the folk punk one-man dynamo, Joshua Stephens.

As is my way when it comes to music shows, I made some animated .GIFs of the festivities. Partake and enjoy!

I’ve made many an animated .GIF in my time. ‘Tis true! Look at ’em all!

Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount at Bob’s Java Jive

Coffee Pot Rock

Coffee Pot Rock

Last Saturday night I ventured down into the Nalley Valley to attend the music show Teapot Pop Extravaganza (though there is some controversy about calling it a “teapot” vs a “coffee pot” vs a “kettle”) featuring Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount!

I'm a Great Big Teapot...

Have you never been to Bob’s? You haven’t!? But it’s “World Famous” (self-proclaimed). It’s a bit of a dive bar, actually, though it has been ever-so-slightly fixed up in the last few years. There is no longer gross carpet on every single surface of the interior. The actual coffee pot is pretty small, and just contains the bar; most of the seating and the stage is in the building attached to the back of the pot.

The show was opened by Vigilante Santos from Seattle, who had an excellent pianist. Then JM+FFD took the stage to much acclaim. It was very gratifying to see how many people got in that building and really responded positively to their musics.

And because I’m me, I of course made (with Google’s help) an animated .GIF of the band rockin’ out inside that Coffee Pot! This is one of my favorites, showcasing some nice fretwork by Geoff B. Gibbs (on bass), and I was actually at a good angle to get Dom “The Nizzle” Cortese (on drums) in the image, instead of having him be hid behind the other band members:

Tacoma natives Trees & Timber took the stage next, but we had a wee beb at our house with a babysitter, so we only stayed for a couple of their songs. It’s too bad Red Jacket Mine didn’t play earlier in the night so we could hear them. We saw them many moons ago at a kids’ show at Freemont Abbey (where they also shared the stage with JM+FFD).

This was the only show on JM+FFD’s events calendar in January, so I hope you caught it. Their next one isn’t scheduled until the end of February! But likely some show(s) will pop up between now and then so you don’t go into too much withdrawal.

Baby’s First Zoolights

The Zoolights at Night!

The Zoolights at Night!

Last week we took Avery to her very first Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium!

If you’ve never been, here it is in a nutshell: during the holidays they string up millions of lights all over Point Defiance Zoo, and after it gets dark you can walk the whole zoo and look at everything all lighted up and purdy. There are some very elaborate displays, and lots of “animated” lights. It’s a really, legitimately nice experience. Take a look-see:

And even though the animals are all put away for the evening, the Aquarium is open (though undecorated) for exploration!

I heart Moon Jellies!

The best part of the evening, of course, was when dread Cthulhu rose as a Christmas surprise and subjugated all whom he did not destroy:

All Hail our Sparkly Lord Cthulhu!

Happy first Zoolights, baby Avery! Thanks to Google+ for automatically animated all of these images and making the Christmas lights sparkle. And long may Cthulhu reign!

Baby Avery’s First Music Show!

Last Friday there was a pretty awesome musics show at Metronome Coffee in Tacoma. I took some o’ them photos.

First up was Lawrence “Sphinx Akashaa” Duncan. For one song he was joined by special guest Chris Blount!

Then was the headliner, Julia Massey and half of the Five Finger Discount (their drummer Dom was off on a Hawaiian vacation):

And since this is me, I made an animated GIF of them. Of course.

After that was Terrapin Productions, who was joined by the FFD’s bassist Geoff:

One thing that was very nice about the night (other than the musics) was the fact that when I looked around the rather-packed room I knew probably 90% of the people there.

The Crowd

The Crowd

But what was especially special was the fact that we brought wee baby Avery with us for her first real outing at only one week of age. She ended up being the real star of the show! It was for many people the first time they had seen her. She was passed from friendly hand to friendly hand all night long.

Even rock stars couldn’t resist the urge of the cuteness of the wee beb:

Julia & Avery

In fact, Avery is so beloved that Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount actually wrote a song for her before she was born. It is called “Montana Capri” because before we announced the name of Avery we used Montana Capri as her codename. This was the first time the song was ever performed live, and it was performed for Avery:

How many babies have songs written for them? And how many babies have the song performed for them live on stage in their first week of life? We have a very, very lucky wee beb.

Unfortunately we had to leave while The Old Salt was setting up due to the wee beb having been out for a couple of hours. But it was a pretty amazing night.
