Can you believe it?
On Saturday my wee beb turned 1 year old. If you aren’t aware, over at her website I’ve been doing a photo-a-day project. Long ago when I started doing this, I had the idea of stitching all of the photos of Avery’s first year together into a video where each photo is shown for one second so the video would be 366 seconds long.
Unbeknown to Carrie, I thought that watching a six-minute video of a bunch of photos would be much better if it had some musical accompaniment. So I secretly set about writing a song that was exactly 60 beats per minute and had exactly 366 beats in it.
We just happen to be a part of a community that contains some of Seattle’s very best musicians, so without Carrie’s knowledge I secretly reached out to several of them to see if they would be willing to be a part of this project, and the response was very enthusiastic.
Over the month of October various awesome musicians recorded their parts and I mixed it all together, until on Avery’s 1st birthday I surprised Carrie with the results (she was rather thrilled). You can now see the full music video here:
If you like the song, you can download it here:
Here are the song credits:
• Me (Christopher Grant Harris): Chiptunes, lyrics
• Julia Massey of Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount: Verse 1 vocals & keyboards
• Jared Cortese of The Jesus Rehab: Verse 2 vocals & keyboards
• Chris Blount: Bridge rap lyrics & vocals
• Gary Lappier of Terrapin: Bridge guitars
• Lawrence Duncan of Sphinx Akashaa: Verse 3 vocals & guitar
I hope you likes!

2013 was a pretty major year for Fools Play Improv: Our 20th Anniversary, moving to a new venue at Olympia Family Theater, getting two new Fools, and of course one fact that stands out pretty strongly: THREE of the Fools had wee babies in 2013!
Pictured: Hilary the Navy Fool with her baby boy Remy, Chris the Purple Fool with his baby girl Avery, and Jamie the Ginger Fool with his baby boy Emmett.
We got all three of them together in one room for the first time shortly before the holidays. Avery turned out to be quite the flirt! First she held hands with Emmett:
I wanna hold your hand!
Then she tried to make out with Remy!
Come over here, baby!
Could these wee bebs become Fools someday? Well, Nathan the Orange Fool’s eldest daughter is already almost of the age where she might consider joining up (she could be the Tangerine Fool—how cute would that be?). And in 15 or 16 years, these three might take up our reigns as well.
It’s crazy to think that just a year ago none of us had babies and we hadn’t even met the Teal Fool and the Crimson Fools. But it’s nice to know that we’re grooming the next generation of Fools.
Now what the heck is gonna happen in Fools Play’s 21st year!? Let’s find out!

The Zoolights at Night!
Last week we took Avery to her very first Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium!
If you’ve never been, here it is in a nutshell: during the holidays they string up millions of lights all over Point Defiance Zoo, and after it gets dark you can walk the whole zoo and look at everything all lighted up and purdy. There are some very elaborate displays, and lots of “animated” lights. It’s a really, legitimately nice experience. Take a look-see:
Twinkle Twinkle, Little Zoolights
The Tacoma Narrows Bridges
O how the oxen sparkle
Rowr (I’m a tiger)
And even though the animals are all put away for the evening, the Aquarium is open (though undecorated) for exploration!
I heart Moon Jellies!
The best part of the evening, of course, was when dread Cthulhu rose as a Christmas surprise and subjugated all whom he did not destroy:
All Hail our Sparkly Lord Cthulhu!
Happy first Zoolights, baby Avery! Thanks to Google+ for automatically animated all of these images and making the Christmas lights sparkle. And long may Cthulhu reign!

I’d be a goner without these tips!
Facing such incredible danger is unbelievably brave. But I’m glad someone had the courage to make this video, because there is now a baby in my life. What will I do
if when Avery attacks me?
Now, thanks to Gavin McInnes, I have some great tips that
might will someday save my life:
I wonder if there is any correlation between a baby’s cuteness and its ability to fight. The baby in the video is pretty durned cute, and it has mad fighting skillz. But just look at how cute Avery is!
She’s ready to Karate me!
I’d be a dead man for sure without the knowledge of how to fight a baby!

After two weeks of indulging in new-baby bliss (and catching up on Doctor Who), I went back to work on Wednesday morning. It wasn’t actually all that bad; the people there had run themselves pretty ragged trying to keep up with my workload, which I greatly appreciate.
I did miss all my girls while I was gone, all four of them. I recently realized that they all have names that end with the “ee” sound: Carrie, Suki, Rory, and now Avery. What is it about names that end in “ee” that attracts me so?
Anyway, it was a good day because I got to come home to this:
The Many Faces of Avery
What isn’t so good is that I can’t take the carpool lane anymore since Carrie is stay-at-home for the time being. So I now have to negotiate actual traffic between Tacoma and Tukwila twice a day. Kinda yucky.
But if anyone is ever in the Southcenter area around lunchtime and wants to grab a bite with me, I am (usually) completely available now! Hit me up! Let’s do lunch!

Last Friday there was a pretty awesome musics show at Metronome Coffee in Tacoma. I took some o’ them photos.
First up was Lawrence “Sphinx Akashaa” Duncan. For one song he was joined by special guest Chris Blount!
Sphinx & Chris
Then was the headliner, Julia Massey and half of the Five Finger Discount (their drummer Dom was off on a Hawaiian vacation):
Julia & Geoff
And since this is me, I made an animated GIF of them. Of course.
Julia & Geoff: Animated!
After that was Terrapin Productions, who was joined by the FFD’s bassist Geoff:
Gary & Geoff
One thing that was very nice about the night (other than the musics) was the fact that when I looked around the rather-packed room I knew probably 90% of the people there.
But what was especially special was the fact that we brought wee baby Avery with us for her first real outing at only one week of age. She ended up being the real star of the show! It was for many people the first time they had seen her. She was passed from friendly hand to friendly hand all night long.
Lara & Avery
Even rock stars couldn’t resist the urge of the cuteness of the wee beb:
Julia & Avery
In fact, Avery is so beloved that Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount actually wrote a song for her before she was born. It is called “Montana Capri” because before we announced the name of Avery we used Montana Capri as her codename. This was the first time the song was ever performed live, and it was performed for Avery:
How many babies have songs written for them? And how many babies have the song performed for them live on stage in their first week of life? We have a very, very lucky wee beb.
Unfortunately we had to leave while The Old Salt was setting up due to the wee beb having been out for a couple of hours. But it was a pretty amazing night.

(Julia is the sloth)
A bunch o’ great musicians are coming to Tacoma this Friday! It’s a night of kinda epic, spacey folk/rock. We have:
This is all happening again at Metronome Coffee, where last we saw Marian Call play.
6th & Union, Tacoma, WA
Here’s the thing: Carrie and I are going to try our hardest to make it to at least some of this show, and we plan on bringing a not-so-little Avery with us! Wee beb’s first outing!
Plans are subject to change, of course, based on how everyone in the household is feeling at the time, but regardless of whether or not we three make it out to the show, I highly encourage all of my T-town (and beyond) friends to head to 6th & Union on Friday night!
The Old Salt, Terrapin Productions, Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount @ Metronome Coffee (Facebook Event)

We’ll meet you there… probably!
