I’d like to make it out to this show but honestly it’s rather unlikely. BUT YOU STILL SHOULD!

Animated Spirit Windows

As threatened, last Saturday night after Fools Play I went to Le Voyeur to watch my friends do the musics. As is my nature, I made some animated .GIFs of the evening.

First off was my friend Tangentbot performing his SPIRIT▴SHRINE project. Take a look!

Spirite[triangle]Shrine

Spirite[triangle]Shrine

Y’know, perhaps animated .GIFs of DJ sets aren’t the most exciting, eh?

After SPIRIT▴SHRINE came Urban Fantasy, a keyboardist and rapper. This was their first-ever live public performance. They explained that they usually have a third member, but she wasn’t there because she was suffering from “the consumption” like you get in the Oregon Trail video game. That was funny. I didn’t get a .GIF of them.

At the end of their set my friend @KowaiHitsuji excused herself to the restroom to get ready for WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION‘s set, which she was going to take part in. When she left @extropic_engine turned to me and asked if I was aware of what getting ready entailed. I said I didn’t, and he urged me to wait and see.

When @KowaiHitsuji emerged from the restroom she was dressed thusly:

That's not a Creepy Sheep, it's a Totoro!

That’s not a Creepy Sheep, it’s a Totoro!

And it was thusly that she performed with WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION:

Sing me a song, Totoro.

Sing me a song, Totoro.

As usual, Le Voyeur and its audience was its own weird self, but I enjoyed to see this show. I don’t think they’re performing again until September sometime (you can look at my calendar to see updates about that).

Spiritâ–´Shrine & windowsninetyfivesecondedition This Saturday Night!

DANCE&DIE@LEVOYEUR

DANCE&DIE@LEVOYEUR

So this Saturday night there is a musics show in Olympia featuring a couple of my friends. First off we have my friend Tangentbot performing his SPIRIT▴SHRINE project (Dark Electronica).

Then we also have Tangentbot teaming up with my pal Extropic Engine as WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION (Ambient Industrial).

Here’s a SPIRIT▴SHRINE track for your listening pleasure:

They’ll be joined by a couple of other music acts: Urban Fantasy (hip-hop/synth-pop) and Kim Jong Illin’ (solo acoustic crust punk).

I am so totally going to go to this show. I know what you’re thinking: but Chris Harris the Purple Fool, this musics show is on a Saturday night! You won’t be able to go because you always perform at Fools Play on Saturday nights.

Well, you’re WRONG. Okay, you’re right about the fact that I’ll be performing at Fools Play this Saturday night. But this musics show doesn’t start until 10:00 PM, which just so happens to be when Fools Play ends! So I’ll be peforming at Fools Play and then booking it the two or three blocks up the street to Le Voyeur to watch some musics happen in front of my very eyes and earses!

SO CAN YOU!

Originally The Old Salt was going to be a part of WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION’s set, but I believe he’s going to have to miss it because he’ll be up in Bellingham being naked onstage in a play. You know how it is.

2 Chances to See Some Metal Guns Get Slung: Gunslinger in Olympia This Weekend!

Gunslinger: Slinging some nerdy metal guns.

Gunslinger: Slinging some nerdy metal guns.

Olympia Artswalk is this weekend, and there’s some nerdy Heavy Metal opportunities for YOU! That’s right, Oly’s own Gunslinger is playing shows on both Friday and Saturday night!

I wrote about Gunslinger back in January, and will again quote their own description of themselves, because it’s a pretty durned awexome description:

We are Gunslinger. A particularly lethal combination of beer, science fiction and METAL!

I’d love to be able to see these shows, but with the wee beb who knows if I’ll be able to? But that shouldn’t stop you!

Three Ninjas: Authentic County

Musician Three Ninjas has always been a bit of a dichotomy. He generally makes two types of music: self-deprecating (and often very funny) hip-hop musics, and old-school, “my truck broke, my woman left me, my dog died, all I can do now is drink” country musics. His hip-hop musics have been very well represented in his recordings, but except for a few one-offs he hasn’t actually released much of his country musics…

UNTIL NOW!

Threeni has now released a full-length album of nothing but authentic, old-school, wish-I-were-dead country musics, deliciously titled Alcohol & Isolation.

Three Ninjas: Alcohol & Isolation

Album Artwork by Jen McCreight!

With song titles such as “Your Mother Doesn’t Love You,” “Feeling Sad & Getting Drunk,” and “I’m Hanging Myself Tonight,” it might be tempting to dismiss this album as parodying or poking fun at country music. But quite the opposite; this is raw, soul-searing and angrily defeated music. This is white man’s blues, as only real country music can be. This is the opposite of ironic.

This is some good stuff.

Threeni and his good pal Joshua Stephens are going on a west-coast tour to celebrate. The tour kicks off this Wednesday 4/16/14 in Olympia at everyone’s favorite hole-in-the wall, Le Voyeur.

Then they return on April 29th for a triumphant return show (and official CD Release Party) at The Skylark Cafe in West Seattle.

I’m not going to be able to go to the kick off, but I will try my darnedest to catch the return. SO CAN YOU!

The 1st Annual South Sound Improv Comedy Festival was Last Night

1st Annual South Sound Improv Comedy Festival.

Funtimes Were Had by All.

Last night Fools Play Improv was excited to be invited to be one of the 5 troupes in the 1st Annual South Sound Improv Comedy Festival. The others were:

And finally, the troupe that organized the whole thing, the brand-spanking-new Something Wicked, which is put on through Harlequin Productions. Yes, the same Harlequin Productions where Fools Play was briefly based for a while in about 1999.

The show was divided into two parts. In the first part each troupe performed a short (15-minute) set of whatever they wanted to do. Though I believe Unexpected Productions and Fools Play were the only troupes that didn’t go over their allotted time rather significantly.

And since I am myself, I of course made an animated GIF of part of the show:

Generation Friends gets a live suggestion from the audience.

Generation Friends gets a live suggestion from the audience.

In the second half of the show, each troupe led a game that incorporated some members of the various other troupes.

It was a pretty fun night. Kalum the Teal Fool and Andre the Crimson Fool absolutely killed it with their characters “Reverend Jim Peaches” and “Augustus” respectively. And it was good to network with a bunch of other improv troupes in the area. The possibilities for co-shows and collaborations with the other Oly troupes is tantalizing.

Special thanks must go out to the alien from Cocoon who made a surprise appearance:

And Big Thanks to Christian Doyle (The Gamers, JourneyQuest) and Mark Alford for organizing this shindig.
