Can you find me in the crowd?

Last Thursday my wife and I went and stayed out late on a school night. Gasp! What could tempt us so? Why, none other than an amazing music show at The Crocodile filled to the brim with amazing local musicians!

First up was…

1. Stereo Embers

The Embers, Now in Stereo!

The Embers, Now in Stereo!

Stereo Embers is one of the many, many musical projects fronted by Seattle musical mainstay Robb Benson. This is a very straight-up rock band. Lead guitarist Tim DiJulio could be described as someone who “wails/shreds/rips.” They’re very good live. They’re also very good recorded. Take a listen:

2. Fine Prince

Mmmm, damn... them princes be FINE.

Mmmm, damn… them princes be FINE.

I had never heard of Fine Prince before. It’s a rather large band for Seattle, with six full members including two keyboardists and two guitarists. Their sound is kinda hard to describe; it’s kind of light, gots a slight groove to it, and is just thoroughly… pleasant. They were a lot of fun. Take a listen:

I had to take off my glasses to hear this Fine Prince (thanks, Howard).

3. Julia Massey & the Five Finger Discount

Here’s the real reason there was a show at all: This was the release party for Julia Massy & the Five Finger Discount’s new album, Heart Tones. It’s now available to purchase on Bandcamp! You should download it now!

Dem tones, dem tones, dem Heart Tones!

Dem tones, dem tones, dem Heart Tones!

Not sure if you really want to own this amazing album? Well, then (1) you’re an idiot and (2) you should listen to this song and watch this joyful video. Then go and buy Heart Tones.

And, as is my nature, I made an animated .gif of the proceedings:

So I got a lot of pretty good photos. Unfortunately, as is often the case when I see JM+FFD, I was not at a good angle to get a good photo of Dom Cortese (the drummer). Here’s the best I could do:

4. Special Guest Chris Blount!

Chris Blount (pronounced “Blunt”) is a good friend of mine who also happens to be an exceptional hip-hopster. He guests on a song on JM+FFD’s new album, which you can listen to (and watch the video) right here:

He guested on that song live on stage as well. I was gonnnnnna take a photo of him performing, but I got so wrapped up in the moment that I plumb forgot. He absolutely killed it up there, and got probably the biggest pop of the night at the end of his verse. So big thanks to Bebe Labree for providing me with some photos from the show and letting me use them here!

You do you, Mr. Blount.

Coming “soon” — a full-length album review of Heart Tones! Honest!

And Carrie & I both have it off, so Thursday night we’re gonna leave the wee beb with the grandparents and we’re both gonna head up to Seattle to see some sweet, sweet, Mike-Eagle-and-Three-Ninjas variety meat.

Nocando, Open Mike Eagle, Milo, and Busdriver of the Hellfyre Club were at The Crocodile Last Night!

And so was I!

Hellfyre burns up the Crocodile.

Hellfyre burns up the Crocodile.

The Hellfyre Club represents pretty much the best in rap today. I always try to see them whenever they’re in town, so it was especially nice to have four of them in one show for efficiency!

My friends Cassie and Sandy were there before the show, and we all hung out with Open Mike Eagle and ate pizza and geeked out about Netflix shows. Sandy made home-cookies for the Club, even! Mike left to go get prepped, and we three wandered to the stage area where we found Jason “Three Ninjas” Brunet.

The show started out with Nocando:

Then came my pal Open Mike Eagle, who had a very special guest guarding his equipment setup:

The Ice King watches over us all...

Since this is me, I managed to make an animated .GIF of Mike doing his thang:

Open Mike Eagle Animated.

It was a great set. After it he and I talked about his fandom of They Might Be Giants (I suggested he could do an entire set of just songs that reference/quote TMBG songs).

After Mike came Milo:

Milo was all highs and no lows.

Milo was all highs and no lows.

I’d never seen Milo before, and had only ever heard songs where he was one among many peformers, never his solo stuff. I was terrifically impressed! That was some good stuff.

And finally came the meistro Busdriver:

Busdriver likes to ushnu.

I managed to capture two animated .GIFs of him:

Get on the bus! In the driver we trust.

And then once everybody had gone solo, all four of ’em got on stage together for another set of songs!

It was funtimes. Why weren’t you there? Oh, yeah, prolly ’cause it was on a Monday night, and I didn’t get home until almost 2:00 in the morning and had to get up at about 5:30 to get baby to her Grandparents and then get to work on time. Y’know. I’m feelin’ the sleeps today, but I tells ya, it was worth it.

Then on Monday we have L.A.’s HELLFYRE CLUB!

As part of their “Dorner vs Tookie” tour to support the release of their collaboration album, these Hellfyre Club members are going to be stopping by The Crocodile in Seattle for what looks to be probably the best overall hip-hop show of the year. With a lineup like that I can’t really see how it’ll be topped.
