Music in Tacoma: The Jesus Rehab, Terrapin, TREVOR PEACH, & Back from Hiatus this Saturday at New Frontier!

It's a Tacomavaganza!

It’s a Tacomavaganza!

Last time a bunch of my favorite musicians performed in Tacoma, I just happened to be outta town. Well, not this weekend, baby! A bunch of great musical acts are gonna be in Tacoma this Saturday night, and I’m gonna be there! Yeah! Oh yeah!

  • The Jesus Rehab: 2-Person Seattle RAWK.
  • Terrapin: 1-person, loopy, spaced-out guitar goodtimes.
  • Back from Hiatus: I confess I’ve never heard of them, but I’ll listen to some of their stuff tonight.
  • TREVOR PEACH!!!!!!! The world’s best worst emo musician EVAR.

All of these musics happen at the lovely retro New Frontier Lounge down near the Tacoma Dome. Just a stone’s throw from my house (if you throw a stone, then drive for ten minutes).

Seattle Magazine, an actual, real-life magazine, just published an article on their website entitled “The 50 Bands Rocking Seattle Music Right Now.

You should peruse the entire article, but here are the three highlights for me: Look at the Indie Pop section and you’ll immediately see some of my favorite musics being avidly represented:

  • Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount / The Jesus Rehab
Anyone who has been reading this website for any length of time (or who knows me in real life) knows what fondness I have for these two bands, so it’s really exceptionally awexome to see them getting the same amount of love from an actual, real-life website and not just mine. Here’s a sample of what Seattle Magazine had to say about them:

Massey recalls Regina Spektor, with her playful voice, prolific songwriting and bouncy pop lyrics, and Cortese’s sound is reminiscent of Weezer, for its big power chords and shrieking, catchy solos.

  • Prom Queen
It is much to my chagrin that I have never seen Celene perform live as Prom Queen, only as her chiptuned alter-ego Leeni. But I have a great liking of Prom Queen’s dark, David Lynch-esque 60s pop stylings. And I proudly backed the Kickstarter for her very ambition Midnight Veil project. Seattle Magazine sez:

Also known as Leeni, this prolific Seattle singer first came on the scene with chiptune compositions (using Nintendo Gameboy sounds) and has since honed a 1960s Parisian noir aesthetic.

Out of all 50 of the bands listed in the article, I had only ever seen two others perform live:

  • The Hoot Hoots
  • Katie Kate

Yikes! I had heard of most of the acts in the article (and heard a handful of them on KEXP), but many of these are complete unknowns to me. The article seemed to be skewed strangely, with some of the genres having dozens of included acts whereas the hip-hop genre only included three acts (none of which were Three Ninjas, bee-tee-dub).

But still it is very cool seeing Julia Massey & The Jesus Rehab get a modicum of the praise they deserve.

SPEAKING OF seeing The Jesus Rehab, they’re having a show this Friday evening! It’s on Bainbridge Island!

Bainbridge Island is, unfortunately, a bit over an hour’s drive away from my house (it might be much shorter than that for Seattle peeps depending on the ferry schedule). So I am a very soft maybe for this show.

But if all possible YOU SHOULD GO!

Julia Massey, The Jesus Rehab, and Terrapin while I’m Outta Town!

Julia Massey, Jesus Rehab, Terrapin

And right in my own backyard, too…

HEY! This Sunday 8/10 there is going to be an ass-kicking musics show right here in Tacoma town! Three of my favorite musics are happening all at once… and I won’t be there to see it!

Yes, Friday morning all my girls and I are heading up to remote B.C., Canada for a several-day vacation. We won’t be back until (very late) Tuesday evening. So we’ll miss this one.

But that doesn’t mean you should! You should go see Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount (especially since this might be the last time to see Geoff B. Gibbs playing bass for them for quite a long while)! You should go see The Jesus Rehab (especially if you like to have your face rocked off)! You should go see Terrapin (especially if you like trippy, rocking, spacey, shoe-gazing guitar loops)!

Bonus, it’s all happening at the New Frontier Lounge in the shadow of the Tacoma Dome (not literally, of course), one of the coolest venues in all of T-town, daddy-o.

I definitely WON’T see you there. But you can see each other there! And when I come back I’ll be coming back with a vengeance, with a new Movie Review and e’ryfing!

Jesus Rehabs on a School Night

The Jesus Rehab has a show Tuesday night!

The Jesus Rehab has a show Tuesday night!

Why must my favorite musics happen live on weekday nights? There are two problems when they do this:

  1. I am old.
  2. I am a parent.

Therefore it takes some pretty special circumstances to get me to go out to a musics show in the middle of the week. Like the musics show that The Jesus Rehab is playing tomorrow (Tuesday) at The Sunset Tavern in Seattle.

Nowadays to get me to go out to musics on a school night, it has to be a musics that I won’t have good opportunity to see otherwise. Like my out-of-town favorite musics who only blow through the area once or twice a year. As much as I love The Jesus Rehab musics shows, I know that I’ll have opportunity to see them again fairly soon, so I don’t feel as much necessity to stay out on a school night.

But that’s just me. And me is not you. That means that YOU should prolly go see this show, ’cause it promises to be muchly about the kicking of ass!

Tuesday, July 1st at 8:00 PM
@ The Sunset Tavern

$6, 21+

And who knows? Perhaps I will be feeling young and spry tomorrow evening and you just might see me there. Who is to be knowing? Are you to be knowing? I am not to be knowing. The only way to know is if you go to the Sunset Tavern and look for me!

See Terrapin Tonight, and Meet Jesus Tomorrow

There are two music shows happening on school nights. One of them is TONIGHT (Monday)!

Terrapin Tonight!

Terrapin Tonight!

Yes, Neighbor Gary in his guise as Terrapin will be playing in Tacoma tonight! It’s at the New Frontier Lounge, which is an exceptionally awesome venue near the Tacoma Dome. It has a good retro vibe to it (it used to be a restaurant/bowling alley) and still has its old-timey signage and everything.

Details:
Burning Palms/Lozen/Terrapin (Facebook Event)
Monday, 6/16 8:00 PM
@ New Frontier Lounge
301 E 25th St, Tacoma, WA 98421
$5 21+

Then TOMORROW (Tuesday) night, you can go to rehab with Jesus himself!

Meet Jesus Tomorrow!

Meet Jesus Tomorrow!

The Jesus Rehab, Seattle’s best two-man band, will be playing at Ballard’s own Tractor Tavern.

Details:
Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires, The Jesus Rehab, Spinning Whips (Facebook Event)
Tuesday, 6/17 8:00 PM
@ Tractor Tavern
5213 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, 98107
$8 21+

Will I see you there? I dunno! They’re both on school nights, and I’m very tired on account of having a wee beb! So we’ll see. I might go to New Frontier but probably won’t get up to Tractor.

A Summer of Movies & Musics

Photo by Emdot. Some rights reserved.

There are SO many movies coming out in 2014 that I really wanna see in the theater. Way more than in 2013. I’ve already seen a whole bunch as evidenced by my review output in the past couple of months. And I’m already three whole reviews behind! And I’m gonna go see another movie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) on Wednesday night! YIKES!

Here’s just a brief list:

  • The Lego Movie
  • Under the Skin
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Maleficent
  • Edge of Tomorrow
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Trust Me
  • Jupiter Ascending
  • Lucy
  • Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
  • Snowpiercer
  • Let’s Be Cops

This also looks to be an excellent Summer for live musics, with shows coming up from a bunches of excellenté musicians. Here is just a brief list:

I’ll have more info on these shows as their dates approach. Just as I’ll have more info on these movies after I see and review them.

Oh, also, I just got Mario Kart 8.

So, yeah, this website is probably gonna be nothing but musics, movies, and Mario for the next three months. Enjoy!

I Don’t Know Who Amy Bockelman Is, but I’ll Be There Anyway!

Bockelfest #4! Rawr!

Bockelfest #4! Rawr!

Apparently there is a woman named Amy Bockelman. I only know three things about her:

  1. She’s from Germany.
  2. She has fantastic taste in musics
  3. She is friends with many fantastic musicians

She also apparently has her own mini music fest: Bockelfest. I gather from inference that it is really just a fancy birthday party, but nonetheless she manages to gather some awexome bands in an awexome venue and have a rockin’ (and public-invited) good time.

This year (Bockelfest 4) the shindig is at the lovely Sunset Tavern in lovely Ballard, and includes these lovely musics:

The Five Finger Discount on one foot each!

Since two of these bands are two of our very-favorite bands in existence right now (and I gather that the other one is some sort of ad hoc band created just for this event), you’d best believe that Carrie & I will be there! Perhaps we will even meet and befriend this Amy Bockelman person. SO CAN YOU!
