Awesome guy Three Ninjas has released a little EP titled “Make Sleepstophers.” I’d like to think that it’s named partially after me. The “stophers” part of me. Anyway you should follow the link and buy a copy, ’cause it’s a hoot-and-a-half (if not MORE).
Also you should go see Three Ninjas live sometime, because he is also quite a bit of the hoots (if not MORE).
Oh, and the guy on the CD cover holding the giant plush? That’s none other than PZ Meyers, noted scientist and the guy who runs Pharyngula, a frequently very funny blog about science and anti-science. Getting him to pose for the cover of an album is quite a coup. Not a coup-d’etat or anything that big, but a coup nonetheless.
The 11th Star Trek movie definitively breaks the odd-number curse (the even-number blessing having already been broken up by Star Trek Nemesis). It’s a rip-roaring, slam-bang spectacle of an adventure movie that manages to feel completely contemporary while still feeling very much like a Star Trek adventure. [Read my full review]
The Wrestler is a wonderful, heart-breaking film that surprisingly raises one of the most important existential questions ever asked. Hard to believe that a movie about a man who puts on tights and gets paid to be beat up could be so profound? [Read my full review]
The first couple of weeks in May are always Crazytime because there are about 14 birthdays (including mine), an India Trunk Show at the Bead Factory, a Tidefest jurying, and a couple of Mothers’ Days. So scheduling anything becomes pretty nightmarish.
Fortunately before all of that kicked off (starts today), last night a whole bunches of us went to Showbox SoDo and saw Julia Massy & The Five-Finger Discount perform a set.
It was a good time. This is the third time we’ve gone and seen them perform so far this year. I suggest all of you do the same!
Lots of us were there, including Jason AKA Three Ninjas. Another Jason was there as well, and they both are of similar size, have beards, and wear glasses. So I suggested they form a band together and call it JJAASSOONN (pronounced “Jason”). I think I have a winner on my hands.
Link of the Month: blowupdoll
No, it’s not some blow-up doll fetish site. It’s a site dedicated to the wonderfully fun musical genre of yé-yé: music of female French pop stars, especially from the 1960s and ’70s. Downloads are available for a limited time only, so be sure to visit often!
Album of the Month: Julia Massey: Moons & Stars Convene
This is some excellent female singer/songwriter folk-rock-pop. A lot of the songs are stick-in-your-head catchy. Her voice is dreamy but strong; she has a good range through both her regular voice and falsetto (except it’s not called “falsetto” if it’s a girl but I can’t remember what it’s called). At times it reminds me of Aimee Mann. She’s currently performing with the Five-Fingered Discount as a backing band, which gives her a whole new sound; I can’t wait for her to record an album with them (hint-hint, Julia).
