Raps for When It’s Just You and the Abyss

OME

Open Mike Eagle has announced his new EP: A Special Episode Of Open Mike Eagle. It gets released on February 3rd!

Whanna whet your whappetite? (What is whappening?) Look no further than here, as yesterday Mike released a preview track from the EP, titled “Raps for When It’s Just You and the Abyss.” It’s a dreamy, succulent offering:

Nice nice, eh?

Hey, listen, if you’re like me (and you should be) and you can’t get your fill of Open Mike Eagle, you shouldst really be listening to his podcast as well: Secret Skin. In fact, in the most recent episode (which featured special guest Busdriver—who has a song called “Secret Skin” on one of his albums… hmm… I wonder…) Mike premiered ANOTHER track from the new EP. So go listen to that. Do it. For me. And for Mike.

Mates of State at Tractor: Animated!

Mates of State

Mr. Mate & Mrs. State

Carrie & I went out Wednesday night and saw Mates of State live at Tractor Tavern in Seattle! Wha-what!? We went out to a show TOGETHER!? And on a SCHOOL NIGHT!?

Yup. That’s how we roll.

Is that why I am so tired?

Anyhoo, the opening act was a band called Fictionist. They were very good! They were like a guided tour through the best of 1980s music.

fictionists

Real? Or Fiction?

After that was, of course, the two-person power-pop of Mates of State! And as is my habit, I made an animated .GIF outta them!

Animated Mates AND States!

Animated Mates AND States!

It was a very nice show. It was fut to go out on a weekday night with my wife and a good friend. It wasn’t so nice to have to get up and go to work the next morning. Mais, c’est la vie! No regrets.

Stuff like this is why “Conan” is my favorite Late-Night show.

Conan + Archer = Conarcher?

Conan + Archer = Conarcher?

Conan O’Brien has long been my favorite late-night TV host. I watched the very first episode of “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in my college dorm (gawd, I’m OLD). And it’s stuff like this that keeps me coming back:

Glorious.

Two-Weeks Gone

You may have noticed (oh, who am I kidding, nobody reads this) that It took me 14 whole days (or two whole weeks) to post my “Of the Month” choices for January 2015. That’s because after the holidays I decided to give myself a nice, two-week break from doing anything creative.

Don’t get me wrong: I love doing creative things. If I weren’t allowed to to creative things I’d very quickly devolve into a raving, grumpy lunatic.

But sometimes not creating anything is nice as well. Especially after an exceptionally-busy holiday season, where my wife and I each had our own families and each other’s, and plus we had a toddling baby in the mix this time. It’s P.C. (that stands for “Pretty Crazy” – Just ask the Power Rangers).

Also in the first half of January about 136 of my friends and family members have birthdays. And I’m pretty sure there are about 60 more birthdays before the end of the month still, too.

But at any rate I’ll be back to a-bloggin’ now if’n it please me.

“Of the (Half) Month” January 2015

Video Game of the Month:
CapnToad Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
A delightful action/puzzle game with an old-fashioned, block-based layout and controllable camera angles. Starring Captain Toad from the Mario Galaxy Series of games, you work your way through a series of small(ish) tableaus, collecting as much treasure as you can before snagging the star, the goal of the level. Toad can’t jump (his explorer’s backpack is too heavy). About all he can do is run around avoiding enemies and tugging stuff outta the ground (like in Super Mario Bros 2). It’s great, simple fun.

Album of the Month:
HootHootsThe Hoot Hoots: Colorpunch
The Hoot Hoots are a Seattle mainstay. They’ve opened for Julia Massey & The Jesus Rehab and vise-versa countless times. They’re good, fun, colorful rock with a playful, comedic bent. This album is some catchy, catchy schtuff.

Movie of the Month:
CAtWSotm Captain America: The Winter Soldier
A tight, tense, political thriller that somehow takes place in the same universe as Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. Read my full review here!
