YesYes! It’s Animated Electric NoNo!

Here's a photograph of a photographer photographing.

Here’s a photograph of a photographer photographing.

Last Friday Night my wife an I ventured (with several members of Gentlemen of Leisure) up to the Great White North of Ballard (the Sunset Tavern to be specific) to watch a rocks-and-or-rolls show featuring our friends to Cortese Brothers, who make up the band Electric NoNo.

Normally Electric NoNo consists solely of Jared Cortese on Guitar/Vocals and Dom Cortese on Drums/Backing Vocals/Every-Once-In-A-While-Keyboard. But this time they were sporadically joined by a whole bevy of additional musicians: a saxomophonist, an additional guitarist, and none other than Julia Massey on Keyboard/Backing Vocals!

As is my nature, I made some animated .gifs of the performance:

O Winged Jared!

It's Skeletom Dom!

Julia + Jared Sharing the Stage!?

The show was a record release for Electric NoNo’s new EP, Rain City Blue. GET IT GET IT GET IT!

The only thing wrong with this album is that it’s an EP, and I wants me an LP! Hop to it, Bros!

Also, expect some exciting announcements soon from Gentlemen of Leisure, as well as a joint Julia/NoNo venture called “Warren Dunes.” Stay tuned, dear reader…

DAMN This is a Great Electric NoNo Song.

Them Cortese bros. are Forty Foot Tall.

Them Cortese bros. are Forty Foot Tall.

My pals Dom & Jared Cortese, who make up the entirety of the band Electric NoNo, appeared on a recent episode of The Spud Goodman Show (an episode which also had guests such as Anderson Cooper and Shep Gordon) as the musical guests. Well, here’s a video of them performing “Forty Foot Tall,” a song from their new EP, Rain City Blue:

DAMN that’s a great song. In fact it’s my favorite from the new EP, just barely edging out “Blue Planet” (you can watch the video for that song here).

SPEAKING OF new EP, it was just released this morning! Here it is:

ALSO: don’t forget that their record release show is TONIGHT!

I didn’t… Until NOW!

Yeh, it looks like Julia Massey will be joining in a songwriter showcase this Saturday, March 11th, at Phinney Center Concert Hall just a few blocks north of Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Surprise!

This show comes directly the day after her husband Jared’s show as half of Electric NoNo this Friday, March 10th, at Sunset Tavern in Ballard!

WOTTA WEEKEND AM I RIGHT FOLKS

Who knew this weekend would be so action-packed?

Original NES Box Art as Wall Art!?

Gasp! 'Tis true!

Gasp! ‘Tis true!

ThinkGeek is right now offering fine-art canvas prints of four classic Nintendo Entertainment System video game boxes:

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Metroid
  • Duck Hunt

You can get a closer look at them in this li’l 30-second ad that ThinkGeek threw together in like two seconds:

Good gods, these would be amazing to have hanging up in an entertainment/gaming room of some sort. <sarcasm>Y’know, one of those extra rooms that you just have lying around your house.</sarcasm>

And though I absolutely adore the Legend of Zelda box art, I kinda wished they’d gone with a different game that fit the same aesthetic as the other three. It looks outta place. Maybe something like Excitebike? Or Kung Fu?

Product Specifications:

  • Classic NES Box Art – Exclusive Canvas Art
  • Officially-licensed Nintendo merchandise
  • A ThinkGeek exclusive
  • Original NES box art printed on canvas
  • Materials: Canvas and pressboard
  • Dimensions: 19″ x 13″ x 3/4″

The Return of DuckTales

Oh, THESE guys...

Oh, THESE guys…

Hey, gang, did y’all know that Disney was re-booting the 80s classic cartoon DuckTales? You didn’t? Well, watch the just-released trailer here:

So I’m kinda pretty excited about this. There were a lot of good jokes in that trailer. I especially liked how everyone agreed which one of the nephews was the evil one.

Yeah, that one.

Yeah, that one.

There are also some great visual gags, like how there are just bags of money lying around the house as seen in the screenshot above. Also this super-quick shot of a map:

But that puffy guy is so cute!

But that puffy guy is so cute!

And the Launchpad gag at the very end is priceless.

Since I grew up with the original DuckTales, the new voices will take some getting used to. The nephews in particular are vast departures from the identical Donald-lite voices that they’ve traditionally had for decades. But it will be kinda nice that you’ll be able to tell them apart just by listening. It also looks like they’ll actually have defined characters instead of being mostly interchangeable. That’s nice.

David Tennant looks to have been a brilliant voice for Scrooge, even if he does sound just a tad too young for my years (like I said, it’ll all take some getting used to).

The new DuckTales does not yet have an official release date, just “mid-2017” (which is kinda vague). But I’m looking forward to it. I wonder if Capcom will make another excellent video game outta this one?

Yeah, that’s me, I’m the guy who got a Nintendo Switch on launch day (I pre-ordered it).

Let's SWITCH things up in here. GET IT? SWITCH!?

Let’s SWITCH things up in here. GET IT? SWITCH!?

So. Yeah. I may not be very productive for a while. Or I might be (even) more sleepy that usual. Bonus: I can bring this thang to bed and play there!

8-Bit Misfits: A Documentary About ME (and a couple other people…)

It's Me! On your screen!

It’s Me! On your screen!

Y’all know I’m in a band, right? RIGHT!? It’s called The Crazy Boy Floyds. I’ve mentioned them before.

If you’re interested in hearing a li’l bit about the LONG and humorous history and process of this band, one of the members (Geoff) put together a li’l documentary about it. You can watch it here and now! DO SO:

There, that was only 6.5 minutes of your life you’ll never get back. You’ll hardly miss it! Though you may wish I hadn’t vocally re-created the first song I wrote.

Right, Geoff?

"Right, dude. Dude."

“Right, dude. Dude.”

Anyhoo, if you want to listen to more, CBF has a handful of songs available for FREE on our bandcamp page, conveniently arranged into four albums by subject matter:

Four Times Four Songs of Fun!

Four Times Four Songs of Fun!

Seriously, this musics is a tonne of fun to both make and listen to. Like I said in the documentary, I’m getting a new(er) computer sometime soon and I’m gonna load it up with Schism Tracker and get some good Gameboy samples all loaded up (as well as my regular CBF samples), then I plan on spending the rest of the year making musics for everyone! I’ll keep you updated-ish as to my progress. <3
