For Your Wednesday Listening Pleasure: “Different Windows” by Smokey Brights

Smokey Brights Different Windows

Is this the kind of monster that you need…

Thanks once again to Eva & Cedric, the Walker Twins of The Black Tones, and their music video show Video Bebop for once again introducing me to an amazing music video that I’d have otherwise probably never seen! (Seriously, you should watch new Video Bebops whenever they are released).

This time it’s local (of course) band Smokey Brights. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them live at some point. But anyway, “Different Windows” is a fantastic song. It’s gots groooove to it. And the video is hilarious, full of dime-store costumes and bored musicians on their cell phones, all with a wonderful 80s VHS vibe to it. Partake and be pleasured:

You have now been smokily pleasured!

For Your Wednesday Listening Pleasure: “What We Have Is You” From Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts

What We Have Is You

Wishes come from you and not a random shooting star…

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is a rather good new cartoon on Netflix, about a tween girl trying to find her family of underground dwellers in a post-apocalyptic surface world full of giant, sentient animals.

This scene is from a flashback to before all the craziness began, showing Kipo and her father (voiced by Sterling K. Brown!!) enjoying some domestic tranquility and a charming, lovely family song. Partake and be pleasured:

You can watch Kipo et al. on Netflix now, and you really should. I’ll write a full-length review of it soon. Honest!

Warren Dunes Returns to Tacoma This Thursday!

Warren Dunes at McMenamins Elks Temple

I was trying to come up with some clever portmanteau, but “Spanish Ballroom at McMenamins Elks Temple” has absolutely no “W” or “D” in it whatsoever!

Rejoice, Tacomen and Tacowomen, for Julia Massey is bringing Warren Dunes back to T-town this very week!

They’re coming to the gorgeous Spanish Ballroom inside the new-ish McMenamins Elks Temple in downtown on Thursday night. Yes, it’s a school night, but it’s an ALL-AGES show and it starts at 7:00, so you can bring the kids! You should bring the kids!

Warren Dunes is sharing the stage with Chris King and the Gutterballs, as well as Tacoma band Modern Daze (of whom I confess I have not heard before). Julia also just announced that the extremely excellent local Tacoma rapper Chris Blount will be joining them for a song during their set!

The Fam and I and some fun kids are making the trek downtown to see this show.
