Oh, Hey, Come See Warren Dunes in Ballard Tonight

Yup, they'll be there.

Yup, they’ll be there. SO CAN YOU!

Oh, hey, yeah, sorry I haven’t been doing much bliggity-blog-blogging lately. I have a three-year-old. Keeps me kinda busy. Also I own a Nintendo Switch. Y’know. So I kinda missed a few things in the last couple of weeks, like how there were two Fools Play Improvs last weekend.

But I did wanna jump on here real quick to say that my wife and I will be heading up to Seattle tonight to see Julia, Jared, Dom, and Matt as Warren Dunes plays Conor Byrne Pub! You shouldst join us all up in there!

Oh, also, I guess this is going to be Matt’s last show as the bass player (for quite a while at the very least), because he suddenly got a job on a cruise that’s gonna last at least six months! Surprise!

Electric NoNo’s Tour Kickoff at Conor Byrne Pub

Electric NoNo Tour Kickoff Poster

All those spaceships in her head…

I actually went out last Friday night! Gasp! And to Seattle, no less. A big thanks to a couple lovely people who dragged old, tired, dad Chris up to Conor Byrne Pub in Ballard to help see off Electric NoNo as they start their latest tour.

A quick note on Sebastian and the Deep Blue (the opening act) first: they somehow managed to cram 10 people onto that tiny Conor Byrne Stage! I managed to get most of them in one photograph, take a look:

Sebastian and the Deep Blue at Conor Byrne Pub.

All the people, all the lovely people…

You had three different types of saxophones, a trombone, a violin, a drummer, a bassists, two guitars, and one vocalist-only. That’s P.C. (“Pretty Crazy”).

Then up came the Electric NoNo!

Jared+Dom = YesYes

Of course I managed to make a couple of animations…

Take off your shirt, Dom!

Electric NoNo at Conor Byrne Pub: Animated!

I already made a “YesYes” pun, didn’t I?

One thing became extremely evident whilst watching Electric NoNo: The really, really kick ass. And “Lickin’ My Wounds” is one of the best rock songs written in the past couple of decades, really. Take a wissen:

This was a tour kickoff show, right? To where are they touring? Why down to the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas! They’re going to be performing in a showcase of Seattle artists alongside some other extremely awexome peoples:

Seattle by Southwest!

Take a look at that lineup! Not only Electric NoNo, but also my favorite Julia Massey and the wondrous Prom Queen! I actually know a few more musicians who are performing at SXSW on a different bill: G.O.L. (Gentlemen of Leisure).

I know the guy in the middle front and the guy in the back right!

If I were a religious man I’d say I was “blessed” to have so many kickass musicians in my life.

Thanks for a great show, Electric NoNo, and much good fortune on your tour! If anyone else is going to SXSW, be sure to try to catch the Seattle X Southwest showcase on Friday and the G.O.L. on Saturday!

I Made Some Animated GIFs of the Julia Massey Album Release Show!

One note, spelled "A.L.I.T.E."

One note, spelled “A.L.I.T.E.”

Saturday night was the album release party for Julia Massey & the Five Finger Discount’s new album A.L.I.T.E. at Conor Byrne Pub up in Ballard. Carrie & I (and a bunch of our friends) went to it.*

There were two opening bands, neither of which I made an animated GIF:

Honey Noble

NOT Rider or Lemon

NOT Rider or Lemon

I must confess I have a hard time remembering the name of this band, because whenever I start to think of a two-letter name that starts with “Honey” my brain automatically tries to fill in the second words as either “Rider” (from James Bond) or “Lemon” (from Big Hero 6). Honey NOBLE had a really cool, 1970s lounge/jazz sound to them. And I really, really loved the inclusion of a clarinet in the ensemble. I’ve only been able to find one song of theirs on the internets, and it isn’t terribly representative of how they sounded on the Conor Byrne stage. I liked it!

Roaming Herds of Buffalo

A Herd of Four.

A Herd of Four.

An interesting group with a mainly relaxed, indie-rock vibe, but with a lead guitarist who plays like he’s in a thrash metal band. You can download their first album for free!

So here they are, the animated GIFs you’ve been waiting for all post long!

Group love.

Ms. Massey!

The one of Julia is a little blurry (my phone’s camera don’t do so well zoomed in in darkened rooms), but you may notice a wee bit of a belly bump. Yes, she has caught the preggers and is well on her way—baby is due between Chrissymiss and the New Year.

I bet Geoff can tell you which song his GIF was made during just by how he’s playing his instrument and which instrument he’s playing. SPEAKING of “which instrument,” Geoff used no fewer than FOUR different instruments during the course of the show, including the debut of his brand-new, hand-built, custom bass:

In all it was an excellenté show, but a bitt bitterr sweeett in that it was Geoff’s final official show as a member of the FFD.

*It was also a very unusual show in that Conor Byrne was at capacity. Sold out. So many people love JM+FFD that they packed the bar so much that they couldn’t physically let anyone else inside. Unfortunately a good handful of my friends were counted in that bunch, and they couldn’t get in until some other people left, so that was a wee bit on the lame side. But the place was packed with other people I knew. And I also ran into a woman I hadn’t seen since we were both sixteen!

But next time, Julia, choose a larger venue for your album release party! Conor Byrne is awesome, but it is pretty tiny.

Also even though this was an album release party, it doesn’t look like the album is available anywhere online yet, but I’ll be sure to let y’all know as soon as it is UPDATE! The Album Has Been Released! You can git it here:

Julia Massey & the Five Finger Discount New Album Release Show This Saturday: A.L.I.T.E.

11/8/14 at Conor Byrne!

11/8/14 at Conor Byrne!

ALL THE HOORAYS! Julia Massey & the Five Finger Discount are releasing their highly-anticipated 4th album with an album release show this Saturday 11/8/14 at Conor Byrne Pub in Ballard!

The new album is called A.L.I.T.E. and from everything I’ve heard from it, it should be a rich & heady collection of songs. In fact, you can preview one of the songs from the album RIGHT NOW by watching this video for “Montana Capri” right here:

Good stuff, right? “Montana Capri” is quite a special song for me, because it was actually written for my daughter before she was born. You see, “Montana Capri” was Avery’s code name that we used for her before we announced her real name. Yes, that’s right my one-year-old daughter had TWO music videos created for her in the span of one weekend! How frikkin’ awexome is that!?

Anyway, you really should come to this show.
