As threatened, last Saturday night after Fools Play I went to Le Voyeur to watch my friends do the musics. As is my nature, I made some animated .GIFs of the evening.
First off was my friend Tangentbot performing his SPIRIT▴SHRINE project. Take a look!

Spirite[triangle]Shrine
Y’know, perhaps animated .GIFs of DJ sets aren’t the most exciting, eh?
After SPIRIT▴SHRINE came Urban Fantasy, a keyboardist and rapper. This was their first-ever live public performance. They explained that they usually have a third member, but she wasn’t there because she was suffering from “the consumption” like you get in the Oregon Trail video game. That was funny. I didn’t get a .GIF of them.
At the end of their set my friend @KowaiHitsuji excused herself to the restroom to get ready for WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION‘s set, which she was going to take part in. When she left @extropic_engine turned to me and asked if I was aware of what getting ready entailed. I said I didn’t, and he urged me to wait and see.
When @KowaiHitsuji emerged from the restroom she was dressed thusly:

That’s not a Creepy Sheep, it’s a Totoro!
And it was thusly that she performed with WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION:

Sing me a song, Totoro.
As usual, Le Voyeur and its audience was its own weird self, but I enjoyed to see this show. I don’t think they’re performing again until September sometime (you can look at my calendar to see updates about that).

DANCE&DIE@LEVOYEUR
So this Saturday night there is a musics show in Olympia featuring a couple of my friends. First off we have my friend Tangentbot performing his SPIRIT▴SHRINE project (Dark Electronica).
Then we also have Tangentbot teaming up with my pal Extropic Engine as WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION (Ambient Industrial).
Here’s a SPIRIT▴SHRINE track for your listening pleasure:
They’ll be joined by a couple of other music acts: Urban Fantasy (hip-hop/synth-pop) and Kim Jong Illin’ (solo acoustic crust punk).
I am so totally going to go to this show. I know what you’re thinking: but Chris Harris the Purple Fool, this musics show is on a Saturday night! You won’t be able to go because you always perform at Fools Play on Saturday nights.
Well, you’re WRONG. Okay, you’re right about the fact that I’ll be performing at Fools Play this Saturday night. But this musics show doesn’t start until 10:00 PM, which just so happens to be when Fools Play ends! So I’ll be peforming at Fools Play and then booking it the two or three blocks up the street to Le Voyeur to watch some musics happen in front of my very eyes and earses!
SO CAN YOU!

Originally The Old Salt was going to be a part of WINDOWSNINETYFIVESECONDEDITION’s set, but I believe he’s going to have to miss it because he’ll be up in Bellingham being naked onstage in a play. You know how it is.

Musician Three Ninjas has always been a bit of a dichotomy. He generally makes two types of music: self-deprecating (and often very funny) hip-hop musics, and old-school, “my truck broke, my woman left me, my dog died, all I can do now is drink” country musics. His hip-hop musics have been very well represented in his recordings, but except for a few one-offs he hasn’t actually released much of his country musics…
UNTIL NOW!
Threeni has now released a full-length album of nothing but authentic, old-school, wish-I-were-dead country musics, deliciously titled Alcohol & Isolation.

Album Artwork by Jen McCreight!
With song titles such as “Your Mother Doesn’t Love You,” “Feeling Sad & Getting Drunk,” and “I’m Hanging Myself Tonight,” it might be tempting to dismiss this album as parodying or poking fun at country music. But quite the opposite; this is raw, soul-searing and angrily defeated music. This is white man’s blues, as only real country music can be. This is the opposite of ironic.
This is some good stuff.
Threeni and his good pal Joshua Stephens are going on a west-coast tour to celebrate. The tour kicks off this Wednesday 4/16/14 in Olympia at everyone’s favorite hole-in-the wall, Le Voyeur.

Saturday night after Fools Play I successfully walked the 2.5 blocks to Le Voyeur in time to catch the music show that was happening there. Of the 4 music acts, I had seen three of them before.
Frances Rose is a goddess who stuns you with her golden voice. Breathtaking as always.
Terrapin Productions drowns you in his wall of sound:

Terrapin: Shoe-Gazin’ Rockstar
The Old Salt attacks with his driven, unconventional soundscapes:

The Old Salt: Makin’ Whale Songs
The Old Salt and Terrapin Productions really complement each other’s sounds. They play in a similar genre but with very different styles.
But the real revelation of the night was Dreamy Weather, whom I’d never heard of before this show:

Dreamy Weather: Dreamy Duet
A duet with a ukulele/vocalist and an electric guitarist, Dreamy Weather blew me away. Evelyn (ukulele/vocals) has a sing-songy, high voice like Katharine Whalen (of Squirrel Nut Zippers) or Nataly Dawn (of Pomplamoose), but with a bit more power behind it. And she looks like a cross between Zooey Deschanel and Lisa Loeb. Plus she plays the ukulele, which is always a bonus for me:

Dreamy Weather: Ukulele Lady
Completely adorable and enjoyable. Evelyn and Frances Rose geeked out about Beyoncé between all the sets. Dreamy Weather only performed a small handful of songs, but that’s just because they’ve only been playing together for a very short time and don’t really have any more songs. I totally would love to see them perform again soon.

Quite a club.
The rest of the month of February is P.C. (that’s “Pretty Crazy” to you). There are a whole gob of pretty durned awexome music shows happening. This weekend are two of ’em!

Free Show at Le Voyeur!
First up, tonight (Saturday the 15th) we have:
All playing Le Voyeur in Olympia. Show starts at 10:00 PM… which just so happens to be when Fools Play Improv gets over. And Fools Play Improv just happens to be about three blocks away from Le Voyeur. So, y’know, if you wanted to go to Fools Play and then afterwards stroll on down to Le Voyeur to catch this show, well, then you’d be doing exactly what I’ll be doing!

Then on Monday we have L.A.’s HELLFYRE CLUB!
As part of their “Dorner vs Tookie” tour to support the release of their collaboration album, these Hellfyre Club members are going to be stopping by The Crocodile in Seattle for what looks to be probably the best overall hip-hop show of the year. With a lineup like that I can’t really see how it’ll be topped.

Monday, 7 October 2013
Tomorrow (Tuesday) in Downtown Oly-Town, hip-hopper/country-crooner extraordinaire Three Ninjas will join Oly’s own ambient/folk/noise/lo-fi guitarist The Old Salt (aka The Periwinkle Fool of Fools Play) at Le Voyeur in order to put on a musics show!

Three Ninjas, The Old Salt, & The Mighty Chitons at Le Voyeur Tuesday, October 8th
It promises to be an eclectic and bizarre show! It also happens to be the same night as Cocktails Through a Stillsuit. And I am probably not going to go to either one, but here’s what you should do: Go to either ONE or the OTHER of them!
