Marian Call & Molly Lewis vs the Mullet: Fight!

At the end of the tour...

At the end of the tour…

Very exciting! Two goddesses of Geek are meeting up about seven blocks from my house to do a musics show! That’s right, chanteuse Marian Call and ukulelist Molly Lewis are going to be at the lovely Metronome Cafe at 7:30 on Saturday night.

Metronome's Logo

RIGHT HERE, BABY. RIGHT HERE.

You’d think that with such an awesome show happening so close to my house, there’d be no way I’d miss it, right? Well… Marian & Molly have some competition. For, you see, Saturday night is also the return of the mullet. A little backstory:

Back in the first half of the 1990s, my brother Mike grew a pretty spectacular mullet. As was the fashion at the time. Just look at old WWF footage from the early 90s. You’ll see.

For the past few months, Mike has been growing his hair long (uniformly this time, not just in the back). And this Saturday night live on stage at Fools Play Improv he is going to get his hairs did. But just the front and sides. That’s right…

The Mullet Returns!

The Mullet Returns!

Fools Play Improv performs “Fools Play Makeover!” It’s gonna be a pretty spectacular show.

Which one of these shows will you see? I cannot decide that for you, my little friends. You must decide:

You must choose one of them! “Neither” is not a valid answer!

A Summer of Movies & Musics

Photo by Emdot. Some rights reserved.

There are SO many movies coming out in 2014 that I really wanna see in the theater. Way more than in 2013. I’ve already seen a whole bunch as evidenced by my review output in the past couple of months. And I’m already three whole reviews behind! And I’m gonna go see another movie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) on Wednesday night! YIKES!

Here’s just a brief list:

  • The Lego Movie
  • Under the Skin
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Maleficent
  • Edge of Tomorrow
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Trust Me
  • Jupiter Ascending
  • Lucy
  • Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
  • Snowpiercer
  • Let’s Be Cops

This also looks to be an excellent Summer for live musics, with shows coming up from a bunches of excellenté musicians. Here is just a brief list:

I’ll have more info on these shows as their dates approach. Just as I’ll have more info on these movies after I see and review them.

Oh, also, I just got Mario Kart 8.

So, yeah, this website is probably gonna be nothing but musics, movies, and Mario for the next three months. Enjoy!

Mix CD: November 2013

Mix CD: October 2013

I’m Missing a Bunch of Album Art!

Still no baby! Everything’s ready for her (including us), but no birth over the weekend. Instead, I made a couple of Mix CDs. Yes, actual, physical CDs. Yes, I still do that sometimes, though it has actually been a couple of years since I’ve done so. So because it’s been so long, I decided to make a double-disc. I also threw out my rule about trying to have only one repeat from previous discs (there are a lot of repeats on these).

For this set I just arranged my collection alphabetically by artist and started at the top. I tried not to use more than 2 songs for any given artist chosen. I got down to the “P” artists before I filled up two discs! I fudged the order a couple of times (Julia Massey shouldn’t be on the first disc, for example), but whatever.

So here are the track lists. Wherever possible I tried to link to somewhere where you could download the song, or at least to a place where you can listen to the song. I was actually able to find them all… except for the songs that I wrote myself…

Anyway, enjoy! There are some good stuffs on these:

Marian Call: “Good Morning Moon” Official Video

My third post about Marian Call in one week! This’ll probably be my last one for a while. Unless she does something cool (and let’s be honest, there’s a pretty good chance of that). But after she performed in Tacoma last Friday, she went and released an official video for one of my favorite songs of hers!

The video was filmed at Space Expo, the European Space Agency’s visitor center (and Europe’s first permanent space exhibition) in the Netherlands. And NASA actually gave her a bunch of space footage and permission to use it in her video! How kick-ass is that?

Marian Call Gets Animated at Metronome in Tacoma!

Continuing in my tradition of making animated GIFs after seeing a music show, here is one of Marian Call playing a kazoo during her set at Metronome Coffee in Tacoma last Friday!

Marian Call: The Animated GIF!

It was a great show! Carrie was able to go, @SphinxAkashaa joined us, and I got to introduce some of our friends to Marian’s music, which is always a good thing.

We’ll Meet at Metronome for Marian (Barring a Beb)!

Marian Call: Good 'n' Geeky

Marian Call: Good ‘n’ Geeky at Metronome Coffee in Tacoma This Friday 10/18/13!

Carrie is crazy preggers (we’re only about two weeks out from our due date), but that’s not gonna stop us from going down to Metronome Coffee in Tacoma this Friday night to see one of our favorite musicians, Marian Call!

If’n you’re not in the know, Marian is a very lovely-voiced singer/songwriter whose songs dive definitely into the geeky. She has a whole album with songs inspired by Firefly and Battlestar Galactica. She has epic and funny songs about two nerds who fall in love but are afraid to do anything about it (“Dear Mr. Darcy“) and defiant nerd anthems (“I’ll Still be a Geek After Nobody Thinks it’s Chic“). She has appeared on stage with Wil Wheaton, Molly Lewis, The Doubleclicks, and others of major geek cred. She’s the real deal, and really talented:

She’s also from the Gig Harbor/Tacoma area, so even though she now resides in the Alaska, she tries to stop by T-town whenever she’s in the area. And we try (usually successfully) to catch her whenever she does. It’s a good time, and I’d love all my Taco Man peeps to come out and join me. And also my Seattle peeps and Oly peeps. Y’know.

Of course, there is always the chance that a wee beb might arrive and supersede all plans. But we’ll be there barring beb!

The place Marian usually plays in T-town closed down last year, though! So for the first time she’ll be playing at Metronome Coffee on the corner of 6th & Union!

But this is not the first time that we’ve enjoyed some excellent musics at Metronome, nor shall it be the last! On November 8th three of my musician friends are going to be playing there: The Old Salt, Terrapin Productions, and none other than Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount! I’ll keep you posted on that show as it develops. We might just to go that show, too… carrying our days-old wee beb to her first live musics show!
