New Movie Review: Muppets Most Wanted (2014)

Muppets Most Wanted

Hi-ho, Kyer-mit thee Frog heere

Muppets Most Wanted (2014): ★★★

Directed by James Bobin

The previous Muppet movie (The Muppets (2012)) banked its appeal on being absolutely drenched in nostalgia. It was for lapsed Muppet lovers, adult children who loved these characters when they were kids who could now share it with their own kids. It had heart and sweetness and, like the original Muppet Movie, a genuinely moving story.

Muppets Most Wanted doesn’t have the advantage of access to all that nostalgia; the previous film is only a couple of years old, so what is there to be nostalgic about? So instead it goes a different direction: with a wink and a shrug it eschews all the feely-feely nostalgia and goes straight for the laughs. And it is funny. Great gravy, is it funny. This might be the overall-funniest Muppet movie yet made.

New Review: The Muppets (2011)

Someday they’ll find it…

The Muppets is an incredible nostalgia trip. It is fascinating in that it isn’t aimed at gaining a new audience for the decades-old Muppet characters; it is aimed squarely at people who grew up watching them but are now adults. Like me. As such, I thoroughly enjoyed it [Read my full review]

“Of the Month” December 2011

Link of the Month:
My Christmas Wish List
Merry Shameless Christmas to Me!

Album of the Month:
A Very She & Him Christmas
She & Him, aka Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, have come out with a very simple, minimalist Christmas album. The vocal reverb is turned up, and the instruments are kept to a minimum. Sometimes it’s just a ukulele; sometimes just a guitar that sounds like it’s straight outta the 1950s. There are only a couple of songs that bring in a full band (one even has backing vocals). The result is a soothing, somewhat spacey and dreamy set of Christmas standards. I like it.

TV Special the Month:
A Muppet Family Christmas
A great 1987 Christmas special that combines the Muppets, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, and even Muppet Babies (appearing as puppets) in one glorious, nostalgic feast of warm feelings and happy times. Problems with the rights to some songs have caused the “official” video & DVD releases of this movie to be edited all to Hell, but right now you can watch the unedited version on YouTube… before it gets taken down!
